Stolen wheel caps, what a PITA! |
|
Last night after some fun with my friends I come outside to see all 4 of my wheel caps were stolen (I noticed at about 1 am). Now, granted it could have been much worse (they could have physically broke in to my car and take much more valuable items) but I still hate the feeling of getting my stuff nicked. Ok... so now the story gets even better. Since these wheel caps go missing quite often here in Miami I thought it might be worth looking for them for sale on ebay. And would you believe it! There was a "used" set of 4 placed on ebay only 3 hours after I noticed mine stolen... (ebay item # eBay Item No. 200081994516)and ebay tells me that the location of this item is less than 5 miles from my address. The seller has zero feedback and has only been a member for a few days.
How humiliating, to think that these quite possibly are my caps! And the worst part is that the least expensive way for me to replace them is to purchase them from the guy who might have stolen them. What can I do? What would you do? And is there any way to keep this from happening again (aside from never parking my truck outside)? Has anyone tried gluing theirs on (but would this precaution end up backfiring as the would be thief would end up damaging the wheel trying to get a glued on wheel cap off?)
Anyway, here is the link to the auction...

I would appreciate it if everyone on this board would refrain from bidding on this item as it would only be going towards this jerks benefit.

G'Day LR3Some,
I have not bid but asked It (the scumbag) if they were stolen and what is the history of the caps.
I also asked It if I could pay by cheque sent to his address. He may fall for it and accept.
It knows I'm from Australia so it won't think of any thing fishy I hope.
Cheers,
David. Did you think I would leave you crying,

If these caps are nicked so often; why not engrave stolen from: (plate # or name or other identifying mark).
Just a thought. 8)

I'm glad everyone feels my pain. First let me say that you are right, of course there is no way to ever know if this is my exact set (as no vin numbers are printed on these) but it sure does look suspicious. Honestly it will always look suspicious when a used set of these caps (for any make of car) comes on ebay (because who would ever sell these?).
As far as ways to prevent this in the future I think engraving my phone number and "stolen property" on the back of them is a good idea. This would make people think twice about listing them on such a public place as ebay. Also, are there any thoughts on the gluing issue? Do you think this would end up causing more problems? I've always wished that these little were designed so they had to be removed from the inside of the wheel. That way a simple set of wheel locks could protect your wheels and these caps. But alas, I don't work for LR.
Hopefully some might take action and place their names and "stolen" on the back of theirs too so this little industry is slowed down a bit.

A hot glue gun, sort of glue would seem to be a good "fix".
I may endgrave mine next time the wheels are off for a proper clean, swap round etc. "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

only when you want to hoist it up into the spare wheel bay after you changed it... does not need removing otherwise.

whenever I've had a wheel balanced the tyre dealer has always had to remove the center cap to fit the wheel on their balancing machine. 1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

I don't think that glueing the wheel cap is a good idea, you need to remove them when the wheels needs re-balancing. '05 LR3 HSE V8 - Adriatic Blue - Larini Exhaust System - Lamp Guards - Dual battery system - Hidden 12k winch - Rasta Sump Guard
