D3 V8 lacks power - any ideas on what to check first?

Hi,

I have a LR3 (Disco 3) in the US, which has the 4L V8. The car lacks power, but isn't showing any faults. It sounds OK, but definitely isn't up to snuff. I know where I'd start with a 2.7 diesel (hoses, etc) but have no idea about the chunk of metal sitting under the bonnet.

Any advice?

Thanks.

First step would probably be checking hoses for any vacuum leaks. Check the air filter, open up the throttle body and if there is black gunk around the butterfly valve give it a clean up.

Well, it might be normal for that engine, fuel type and emissions config. US cars seems sluggish compared to UK equivalents. What are the specs for that engine in the state where is was registered?

I agree with the above.
First try the Air Filter, if it looks due a new one they are easy to do.
The check all the hoses for air leaks.
Clean the MAF with cleaner - really easy.
Then take the throttle body off and clean the butterfly on both sides, it will have gunk on at least one side.

Also check what Fuel you are putting in - the 4.4 V8 is very tolerant of low grade fuel but it doesn't really like it. In Canada the fuel grades are not as good as the UK and I end up paying extra to put in what would be considered bottom spec in the UK.

Also are you sure it is a V8, as the 4.0 is a V6 (only available in a few markets - not the UK). I've never driven a V6 but heard they are a little sluggish.

On top of all that what are you comparing it to - the TDV6 has a lot of torque and although the V8 has more power you don't notice it as much pulling away. It becomes more noticeable on overtakes and at higher speeds. The speed can also be quite deceptive the engine is very smooth and picks up speed with less drama than the diesel.

Thanks guys. Will check all that stuff. I had already checked the MAF - it was surprisingly pristine. The air filter is new, but I'll take a look at the hoses.

Happyeater, I'm in the US (the first line of my post was a clue! Mr. Green ). It's a V8 for sure.

I only put in premium - and there's definitely a difference between the way it runs on 93 vs say 87. It's as noticeable as the price difference at the pump Big Cry I do absolutely take your point about smoothness, however. I keep finding myself checking the RPM to make sure it hasn't stalled. It's incredibly quiet. I guess I'm comparing it to my SDV6 8 speed that I just sold in the UK. Maybe it's not a great comparison. I loved those cars and especially the 8 speed box.

I thought as you put 4L V8 it might have been a V6 as the V8 is a 4.4 - I think the V6 was only available in US and Canada - (maybe Aus and SA).

I think you might have answered your own question though. Very Happy

The SDV6 produces 252hp at 4000rpm and 443lb-ft of Torque at 2000 rpm.
The LR3 V8 produces 300hp at 5,500rpm and 315lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm;

Its the torque figure at much lower rpm mated to the 8 speed box, not a six speed like the V8, that makes the SDV6 feel quicker (and in real world driving it probably is quicker). Maybe in a foot to the floor drag to 60 there might not be much in it, but for rolling overtakes etc the 8 speed box can use more of the torque seamlessly long before the extra bhp of the V8 makes a difference.

The SDV6 turbos also create an effect you wont get in the NA V8 which can add to the conclusion that the V8 feels a lot slower.

I have to admit though I love my V8 and am tempted to take it back to the UK if/when I return!

I hope you enjoy your time in the US, with its amazing 4 wheeler trails, cheap fuel, and good weather. Very Happy
