Transfer case oil

I have read several good threads on this website which specify which oils to use in various locations.
I spotted one topic on another site which alluded to thick oil in the transfer case aggravating high fuel consumption.
At the risk of a verbal beating, would anybody ever recommend or suggest using synthetic ATF in the transfer case?

Recommend you stick to the LR transfer box oil/Shell TF0753, but if you're dead set on using something cheaper, use a manual gear oil instead of ATF because it will at least give the largish ball bearings in the transfer and centre diff better support. However because the centre diff lock uses a clutch pack like an auto trans, it would need a fluid that works with friction clutch packs - MTF is not really suitable for that, so the centre diff lock may not work as intended.

To my eye TF0753 is a mix between a thicker gear oil and ATF to support the clutch pack. I did a test with TF0753 and LG6 because to my eye they looked and smelt the same. However TF0753 has a higher viscosity than LG6. I therefore would not use LG6 in the transfer case.

For the difference in price over say 5 years of motoring I would not chance it. Use LR oil but get it from Advanced Factors.
