Surprised a DHL driver was worried about the loading bay - they usually just abandon their vans anywhere and everywhere and sod anyone they inconvenience. Evil or Very Mad

More like "this week".

I'm lucky enough to have a brick built "man cave" 24 x 12' at the bottom of my garden. Up to now it's been electrically heated but now too expensive so decided to have 3 radiators installed. Pipework already in between the house & mancave.
Now, here is the "hindsight" - don't get one of your wifes "besties" to do it & get a quote (said it would take a couple of days & based on what he had charged before I allowed around £500/600.
Towards the end of the job it was clear there were issues ;
Radiators mounted too high (I specified as low as possible for a good reason) & 2 not quite where I instructed.
Untidy surface pipework, loose/missing clips.
2 x leaks on the speedfit fittings.
2 x leaks on the boiler flow.
Pipework to the boiler obstructing refitting the casing.
Pipework behind washing machine stopping it going back fully.
Primary circuit drain valve butched causing about half a day's time (why do plumbers alway seem to use grips on them instead of a spanner ?)
& last, but not least the additional pump fitted the wrong way round so that when both pumps are running they are "fighting".
He was a very slow workere too.
This was on the forth day, he wanted to be paid again to move the rads, so I called it a day. He wanted £350/day. Now, that sort of rate for someone that is reasonably quick & does a good job is fair.
We came to a compromise (lucky for him I did not want to cause any friction between my good lady & her bestie or I would be getting someone else to put it right & deduct it from his price).

So, lesson learnt, rant over, sorry to ramble on.

I learnt a similar lesson many moons ago. I now just use good workman for the jobs I can’t do. I live in a small village so you have to be good to work in it because word gets around. We have a plumber who has to travel further and further outside the village to find work. Sadly it’s a reflection on his skills not his personality.

Perhaps your wife's bestie committed him to it without asking him first and he wasn't too chuffed?

Good point but she was not too keen on him doing the job (maybe, she knew what a poor worker he is LOL !).

My wife is awaiting a back operation. We live in Ceredigion but the op will be in Glamorgan. After being asked to get drive an hour and a half for pre-op bloods for an 8:00 am appointment, she did the sensible thing and arranged for the bloods and MRSA swabs to be taken at our local surgery. All good until this morning, when she was rung and asked to make the three hour round trip for another swab (on her birthday!). Despite being an RGN for the best part of forty years, they won't post the kit for a DIY swab. Glamorgan and Ceredigion differ with regard to this one swab. They won't even compromise on having the swab performed in a nearer hospital of the same health authority.

Health-care in Wales is Censored . After breaking a hip, my mother-in-law recently waited near three hours for an ambulance. Because there were neither beds nor trollies, she sat in an ambulance for six hours (with the engine running as there are no electrical umbilicals at the hospital) alongside six or seven ambulances in the same situation. The paramedics dealt with this one case in their entire shift and the spare ambulance had to come from Llanelli to collect them to avoid them going over their hours. No wonder people use the magic words "the patient is going in and out of consciousness" to get the air ambulance. A friend of ours died recently after a heart attack after the 999 call-centre told his family they would have to drive him to hospital. En-route he had another heart attack but they couldn't access any of the [admittedly abundant] defibs because there was no 'phone signal to get the access code. The ambulances are only allowed to drive 20 mph over the speed limit (if they have the blue-lights on) so with the recent decrease in speed-limits, they can only drive 40 mph when they could previously have driven at 50 mph. But now the Senedd are discussing exempting buses from the 20 mph limits because the timetables don't work with the limited number of buses in the [nationalised] transport system! If Wales just did the opposite of what England does it would probably thrive.

Hugh, my Mum had a TIA earlier in the year - although at the time of requesting an ambulance everyone thought it was a real stroke - and she waited for seven hours in the back of an ambulance before she got in to hospital. The ambulance got to her pretty quickly but from there on it was all just waiting, waiting, waiting. Lives north of Swansea so "enjoying" Wales's healthcare system too.

It's all very worrying, Wayne. It has changed the way I look at risk: every time I use a chainsaw, quadbike, ladder, etc., I worry about what might happen if I have an accident, to the point where I only use such things with other people in the house and linked by walkie-talkies. An electric fence probably makes an effective defib!

I feel your pain ! I technically live in "Salford" as far as Health Authorities go, and my GP is within Salford too.

However, because I'm "special" the teams I need to be seen by are part of Manchester Foundation Trust.

I've tried many things to improve the interface between the 2 authorities and whilst it often works (for me only and only case by case, they never seem to spot opportunities for system wide improvements ) i do occasionally hit serious stupidity barriers - latest was pick up swab kit from GP, drive to Manchester Royal and hand to a nurse with instruction "needs the Manchester version of the paperwork" ... swab never got processed as it was "done incorrectly".

Also, Manchester has gone chiefly online - and on the whole I love it ! The downside is that ALL prescriptions are only accessible within their system which currently means a trip to Manchester Royal and queue at the most useless pharmacy on the planet, whereas previously, i could get prescriptions at clinics (which are chiefly NOT at Manchester Royal )and take them to my local pharmacy.

Shrinkflation

SWMBO has 'hot chocolate' drink. Used to be in straight-sided container and 300g I think it was. Price went up over time up and then the packaging changed to this 'waisted' container and the price stayed the same, higher price, but the contents weight has now been cut to 220g.

Therefore prices have already gone up due to 'trading difficulties' or 'increasing costs due to Covid' or whatever other Censored they want to state and now shrinkflation has added another 36% to the cost in one go! That new blow moulding tool they need must be bloody expensive Evil or Very Mad

Thing is you can see the container is only just over half full anyway, and its not 'settlement'
