Differences in economy with the Discovery is really not the point. There may be a few MPG difference, but let's face it, don't expect them to be that economical and you won't be disappointed. The way you drive it is a much bigger factor.
As for towing, they are superb. The D4 won lots of towing accolades in the caravan press most years of it's production, either best in class or best overall. I shouldn't be surprised if the only thing better is indeed a D5.
D4 excellent for towing. I have had several D1's a D2 a D3 and now on second D4 and this 8 speed one is by far the best. tow a twin axle caravan probably weighing in at 1900kg's with fully loaded car and you hardly notice any difference. a run to scarborough with the van on the back will give me about 17mpg but it is a lot of hills so on straight motorways etc you would get slightly better

I had a D3 for over 10 years and it was a brilliant towcar, however in April after quickly discounting the D5 as its replacement, I bought one of the last new Landmarks available.
The D4 is smoother, quieter, slightly more economical towing (24 mpg as opposed to the D3's 22 mph) much smoother gear changes and more powerful, even though my D3 had a BAS Re-map. I certainly don't regret buying it as a towcar

autos usually 345-380 miles
just general all round averages in my experience over 7 years of ownership
towed a large twin axle with them all D4 8 speed best for ease towing but there all superb towcarsMY05 SE D3 Manual my first LR what a car

D3 manual, D3 6spd auto and D4 8spd all produce roughly same fuel consumption figures in my experience. However, D4 is streets ahead in terms of performance, handling & 'quality'. Tow horsebox and single axle caravan (although not at same time ) and all have excelled at that job. Prefer D4 to FFRR TDV8.LR history:
2016 D4 Landmark
2012 Defender 110 XS 2.4
2011 FFRR Vogue SE
2002 Defender 90 H/T Td5
2008 D3 XS TDV6
2006 D3 S TDV6
1996 D1 300 Tdi
Some overlaps involved & other marques interspersed!

O8 D3 manual - good for both non towing and towing except had to keep changing gear!
66 D4 automatic - never thought there would be so much difference - more economical by 4 - 5mpg(on Wranglers though and D3 was ATRs). Easier towing with auto box and with slightly heavier single axle tintent. Towing mpg probably 1 - 2mpg better than manual with similar driving.
Club RLD spare wheel protection
Club RLD skid plate
Club its all black
Club D3 - it's gone
Club D4 - just arrived and still all black

Outstanding at towing...Horse trailer and two horses (550kgs each) they have had a few hairy moments as you forget you are actually towing something.
