Clunk changing into 1st
hi all
i have a V8 2005 D3 (auto)
ive just noticed a symptom, when i decelerate (with brakes), when im just about stopped, when the car switches into 1st gear, it seems to clunk into 1st. its not huge, but definately noticible.
it also does it when you manually force it into 1st.
any suggestions on what this coule be?

Is the clunk accompanied by physical movement of the vehicle like it's trying to move (against the brakes)?
Does it do it every time or is it only in certain situations?
I notice a slight clunk & movement when in low range and moving between Low 1, 2 or 3. I've always assumed this was just free play in the drive train being taken up by when selecting very hi-torque gears. I could be wrong so I'll give it a bit more consideration next time I'm out in the D3.

Common fault - IMO 3 things need doing, all need a FaultMate or similar.
1. Update the autobox software with the 'Bump Fix' patch
2. Recalibrate the Transfer Box
3. Reset the gearbox adaptations.

I've tried the bump fix etc but throws up errors ! Is this bump fix only for a certain year model ? I have a 07 hse autoLast night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where,s the f**king ceiling!!

Has the clunk always been there and you just started noticing it or has it got worse?
I have the clunk too. Been told it's normal for a small clunk. I've done a gearbox flush to fix a slight shudder and the clunk is still there. Have it on my list to do the transmission software flash.
What confuses me is that it seems to have got worse over the last year. Then how can it be a software issue Unless it's the adaptations that are causing it Or I'm just paying more attention to it

My clunk is every now and then , have always had a slight vibration felt through the steering wheel and body around 1500rpm ,have previously reflashed the gearbox and transfer box and gearbox is smooth as silk and no vibration ! But always seems to go back to vibration after approx 40 miles ? Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where,s the f**king ceiling!!

ATF overheat can be the cause if it gives vibes after running a few miles. There are a couple of posts on here but can't think of who the author was just now

Bump fix patch needs the accompanying base software to be at the correct version - it doesn't work with all releases. IIRC there are 2 versions - you need to use the one matched to your current software.

It vibrates when cold so can rule the atf overheat out , It does feels slightly smoother after approx 30 odd miles though , but as i said previously after a gearbox and transfer box reflash the vibration dissapears for about 30 odd miles

I only have the one bump fix in my faultmate files ! you say there should be 2 ?
Im not convinced the right software has been put on the car for my gearbox , how would i find out what was on the car originally Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where,s the f**king ceiling!!

I have been trying to fix this problem to no avil.
I had the software upgraded which apparently included the bump fix patch, cleared adaptions and reset transfer.
Still have the problem. The mechanic said it could be a result of big tires which I put on every now and then to go off road.
Can someone plz help. Wanna get this sorted and my mechanic doesn't seem to have the answer.
