Whirring Noise developed? |
|
Got in the D3 this morning and when i started it up heard a little whirring noise that is not usually present? It seems only to be happening below 1200rpm unless I just cant hear it after that for the noise of the engine? It seems to increase as the revs increase even when just parked up it can still be heard and can only be discribed as the sort of noise an electric motor would make on a radio that wasnt tuned in properly although didnt have the radio on. Done some work last month on EGR's and cooler bypass so have checked that none of the new water hoses/heatshields were catching on any belts or similar but all seems okay

Alternator bearing, Aux belt bearings, Cam belt bearings/tensioner, water pump, power steering pump
Need to isolate the noise, could be any or none of the above, have you recently re-tensioned the aux belt? Are your cam belts within age/mileage? Paul Redding

Thanks Guys
Can rule a few out, hopefully anyhow. When I had the cambelt service about 15 months ago (a year early) had them replace pullies and tensioners and water pump so although there is still a possibility hopefully unlikely. Any of the others liable to fall to bits soon after the noise starts?

Alternators are not allowed to die until ?????? (as we have sold out this week...sooo many!)
EDIT:
In fact change that - Denso have just said over 200 on back order in the UK and they don't know when stocks are arriving, so looks like I am going to have to supply exchange units for a little bit Paul Redding

Thanks for that Yogi and I thought I was going to get a cheap months motoring for a change I must be mad! But seriously it does sound more like an electrical noise than mechanical so I suppose that could well be the fault? Are the LR alts Denso make?

This may sound daft but did you have anything plugged into the AUX input? I've had this on my old D3, very strange. Club Exped trailer

No nothing plugged in other than an USB adapter but that is always plugged in.
If I take some readings from the batt with and without the engine running and under load would it show if the alternator is failing and does it show the battery light on the dash or is this a bit of a lottery? I did think I could smell some slight burning smell this morning which I suppose coud be te diodes on te way out but coud be imagining things?
Will prob stick a meter on over te weekend see if its still charging.

no matter the country in question ... it seems that all LR´s alternators is going to die after this hard winter ... mine just last week ... first a slight noise Dyson type ... days after a slight burning smell .... and finally...the fixed red light battery charging problem ... and he died last Monday. Just say that my adventure attempt to reach workshop before you drain the battery completely hard just quarter of a mile ... the crane roadside assistance and 400 € (including VAT and labor included) did the rest ... in less than 24 hours ....
seems like a joke, a coincidence ... but are bad times for alternators in D3
lost in translation!

My alternator is charging 2 batteries and the D3 does lots of short trips think my garage is about 3 miles from me so if I get the red light I will never make it. Not to mention I have a very expensive glass Matt battery which I certainly don't wont the alternator to destroy although the second battery should hopefully disconnect itself should the worst occur.
Anyway have any conclusive tests I can carry out before it gets to red light stage as I'm not completely sure the alternator is the problem although sounding like it may be? Also how much does TLO charge is for Denso alternators?
Thanks for all your help so far D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo

Ok done load test ignition on headlights on fans etc for 5 mins battery was showing 13v before this and 12v after the load before starting engine. Started the engine without reving it and the reading stayed at 12v for about 20 to 30 secs then I went and revved the engine a few secs tested again and batt was showing 14volts the after a few more seconds passed it increased to 15 volts and stayed there. I have now plugged it into the ctek and it is on a normal charge showing the battery at three quarters full? None of what I would have expected from any of the readings if the alternator was dodgy except perhaps it's ability to start charging when first started up? Still a slight burning smell though from down near the alternator but checked nothing is rubbing on the pulley or belt so unless I have caught it at the earliest stages of failure it has left me in the dark yet again. Any idea's? D4 HSE Lux MY16 Club Waitomo

mine was showing up to 15v the day mine (nearly) failed.
i watched it on the diagnostic screen as i was driving, it behaved normally most the way to my indy, but dropped the charge as soon as I pulled into the gates.
had an electrical burning smell from that area too at first. was told its early signs of failure and the smell is the rectifiers/resistors begining to fail, hence a 15v charge
its now at a constant 13.5 v

Cheers yogi much appreciated.
Still sort of have it in mind that it must be the alternator in my head and since the car is now 7 years old and still on the original might just change It anyhow and save all the bother of it failing on me and possibly destroying a £170 battery. It's just one of them money decisions yet again.
