Having stayed with a temporary ground from battery to engine for about a year i finally decided to remove the wheel arch liner and make a proper job of it. Have had some strange battery voltage warnings so thaught making the ground correct is a good starting point.
This is the state of a 2010 earth strap. The exposed copper strands are so fatigued and corroded that they break like uncooked noodles
Any advice on how to reach the end that goes to the alternator? The cable from chassi to alternator do look fine so I might get by with just replacing the body/chassi connection but feels a bit daft not to replace the whole cable while I'm at it.

Had exact same problem with my MY12 D4 last week. No starter, burning smell under bonnet. The AA mechanic diagnosed cooked engine to chassis earth lead. Some others might have had me away on a recovery truck and then playing parts bingo with a starter, alternator, etc. Thank god there are still good mechanics out there!
He fitted a temporary earth strap direct from battery negative terminal to bracket on top of engine and job done until my specialists sorted out a proper big lead from a convenient engine bolt to a convenient chassis bolt yesterday.
The 'common' faults on D3's and D4's are no worse than some other motors but seems many would be avoidable with a bit more engineering design nous...
Ps. Only a fool would have bought a new £180 battery (great overnight service from Tayna as usual) as a knee jerk reaction in an attempt to fix the problem, but does anyone need the 2022 (2 years old) Varta G14 AGM 95AH 850 Amp CCA battery that I removed and the AA tested as all good..?!
