2015 D4 won't start - Earth strap?
Morning all.
Parked my 2016 D4 HSE lux up yesterday, left it on charge all day and now it won't start.
Which is a real pain as I wanted to move it out of the way for a skip lorry to collect the skip it's blocking in!
Although I'm also getting an actuator stuck fault code.
So obviously a good place to start looking is the engine to body earth strap.
Can anyone tell me exactly where it is?
To test the theory I'd like to try running a jump lead between the engine and -ve battery terminal, but having whipped the engine cover off I couldn't see anywhere to attach the clamp to the engine!
Does anyone have any ideas where to put it?
Also, what actuator could it be?
I forgot to take a note of the code, but will have another look shortly.
At least I'm working from home today.
Thanks

Basically I jump in, put my foot on the brake, press the start button, the dash lights up as usual then nothing happens. If I take my foot off the brake I get a message saying press brake to start engine.
My gear selector doesn't usually raise until after the engine has started, so doesn't raise up.
I am a little concerned that having it plugged into my CETEK all day yesterday has done something to an ECU!

DM
Hi
Been trying to do that, but can't find a point on the engine fron the top to connect a jump lead from the battery -ve.
Was expecting a lifting eye or something but can't see one.
Sure there was one on my D3

Could the brake light switch be an issue?
I have one somewhere if you need one Simon.
Nigel
Thanks Nigel.
i think the brake light switch is OK.
If I take my foot off the brake with my finger on the Start button I get a message to press the brake pedal to start engine, which suggests it's OK.

Thanks DM
I put a jump lead between the -ve terminal and what I assume you are talking about, a black metal bracket with a couple of M10 threaded holes in it.
The engine did turn over, but where my jump lead was only connecting through a small area of paint all I got was a puff of smoke from the bracket where the jump lead was attached.
I crawled under the car, and having taken off the small cover at the front of the wheelarch managed to trace the Earth wire up towards the engine.
It's very loose, and flapping around, so i assume it's broken.
Do you have a part number DM?
Thanks

I would have thought any earth strap with correct size hole and length from any motor factor would do. Someone will probsbly prove me wrong.Welsh Collie Chauffeur Service To Barney & Rooney.

It's not just a simple earth strap by the look of it. it's got some pre-formed bends and insulation.
I'll see what the lead time is.

the last gateway module I had reported by the IID tool was related to the stop/start battery being in-op and had it replaced but it didnt stop the vehicle starting so I would think that may be a result of the problem rather than a cause as such.
Hope you get it sorted soon, I believe the earth strap does fail on some of the later models from what ive read

Nasher.
Usually, the issue is between the chassis and body
The new earth cable is a to fit, bolts onto the engine mount, then chassis, then body
I've cut up an old D3 one to go specifically between the chassis and body points, in a crisis
Id imagine any 4/500A strap would do the job just fineMy D3 Build Thread
