Can you not just strip it back at the end next to the engine and splice in a section of cable or fabricate a bracket?

Good idea, but it's pretty difficult to get to, and just undoing a nut in that position will be hard enough.

I'm nearly finished working from home for the day, so am planning on having a better look shortly.

I can obviously see where it attaches to the body and Chassis, and can just see the broken other end flapping about, but can't see where it's supposed to be attached to.

Any info would really be appreciated.

Right, I can see the broken bit and the 10mm head bolt that is still holding it down.

Plan a is to remove as many of the heat shields as I can to gain access, but Plan B may be to create a small adaptor plate and bolt it to the top of the main M12?? bolt up through the middle of the engine mount using another nut on top of the main one.

Had same issue this morning, parked up last night all fine, went to start up today everything is normal apart from no turning over to start up. AA guy had no earth straps or correct wire gauge to make temporary one so LR tech guy coming out in morning under extended warranty. Bit embarrassing really as happened as we should have been going to dealer to swop to D5 !!! Maybe it heard us talking about changing 🤔🤔

I have this same issue, the earth strap has snapped at the engine mounting. Any tips on getting access to the engine mount to reattach?

My 2010 D4 wouldn't start after first night of temperatures below freezing. Fault codes matched the ones mentioned in this thread and i got it running by putting a jump lead as temporary earth. So hopefully thats my only issue.

My question now is: can you just rig a home made earth cable from battery -ve to engine or is it preferable to find the faulty section and splice/replace the original ?

Sounds like a b Censored d with access, to remove all those panels and I have no clue where its routed (i guess some research in workshop manual etc might help). Beeing left hand drive i might have different routing to tackle as well

Want this sorted post haste, otherwise i have a long trip with family of four, strollers etc in my wifes Audi A1 to look forward to next week.. Bow down

We ran a temporary earth from the d ring under the engine cover to the -ve on the battery.

Access to earth strap is under the offside wheel arch liner.

I think ill do the same for now and replace it as soon as possible?

Had a look undernath and with the front "skid plate" removed i can see a blue polyester braided cable with copper strands in that looks really worn and corroded. Guess thats my culprit.

does anyone know the part number for the earth strap? looking for one but cant find a good match. Seems to be the same for LHD/RHD but maybe different for Diesel and petrol since alternators are positioned differently

pretty poor picture, ill try to get a better view with some more panels off

Here's the earth strap I have as a spare for my RHD D4. LRParts.co.uk supplied it very quickly. I don't know if the LHD differs?

Just came in on the end of this, but basically you could run a decent sized cable from most bolts on the engine to anywhere substantial on the chassis, it does not have to be where the cable is now.

As a rule, if a nut/bolt has a 13mm head, it'll be good enough for an earth strap.

Agree I got mine going and ran if for a week by making two cables up (35mm2). One from the body to the chassis and the chassis to alternator mounting bolt.

My friend who owns a landrover specialist now checks these on every service as he has had a load of 2016 d4 with the same issue since mine. He suggests the cable is mounted under stress in error at the factory and causes it to snap at the lug on the engine.

Worth a check if you have a later car.

This community really is the best! I dont think i could have kept this car financially or mentally without you fine folks! Thumbs Up

I didn't have a cable with properly fat cross section so doubled up and took two 16mm^2 cables as temporary ground directly to battery. So far it seems to do the job.

Looks like there are a number of similar parts, so for future reference here are some of the part numbers i have come across:
Disco4: LR020083, LR024287
Disco3: YTB500420, YTB500260, YTB500280

They all seem quite similar but could very well be different in length+gauge. Since im in Sweden and need the part quicker than a UK based store can ship it i probably will just take what i can get my hands on, possibly buy two short cables and connect like this:
