If the BBC is to be a publicly funded broadcaster (and I have no problem with it being so although Channel 4 does ok as a commercially funded, public service broadcaster), fund it from general taxation and be done with it. The licence fee is an anachronism and costs money to administer - Capita will take up to £1.5bn between 2012 and 2027, for example*

More on the story from the BBC themselves:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-48583487

Quote:
It follows a consultation with 190,000 people, of which 52% were in favour of reforming or abolishing free licences.

There's that 52% figure again. I'm beginning to wonder if every vote is going to be 52% from now on! Rolling with laughter

Nah, the oldies that voted Brexit would obviously want to keep their freebie TV...it's what we fought the war for, after all! Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

I remember my late Grandma asking TPTB to not give her the winter fuel allowance as she didn't need the help, thanks very much. Tough - you qualify so you get it. Seems that some need help, some don't so just help those that need help. Ah, but that means...means testing (shock horror!) and for some reason that is frowned upon. Cue the calls of "I've paid my dues so I want what's coming!" Whistle

Never understood why the TV licence or heating allowance should be free to all without means testing.

I agree, but maybe the ceiling upon which you have to pay the Tv licence should be annual income of above £75k, that sound reasonable. Thumbs Up

There was an argument years ago that the cost of the administration to do the means testing was so expensive it all but negated the savings it would make.
You’d have thought that wouldn’t be the case now though, with technology!

To all those that think means testing is a good thing, there are serious downsides too:

I know it’s the Grauniad (and all the right wingers will judge it before they read it Rolling Eyes ) but it’s still worth looking at Thumbs Up

Many of my clients donate both their Winter Fuel Payments and the cost of BBC licence fee to charities.

I believe the practise is quite widespread. For example:

I personally think anybody who has fought or served in the armed services should get a TV licence gratis in old age. The way we currently treat our service personnel in later life is a disgrace.
