Caravan reversing camera idea |
|
I know some of you have some pretty complex setups regards reversing cameras on your rigs and wondered if my idea would pass muster with you experts. I saw on a previous post where someone used the 12n plug / socket to hardwire the reversing camera. I wanted to know if there was a way of joining into the existing reversing camera wiring to enable the caravan camera to work whilst towing but revert to the car camera when not?
My expertise is weekend DIYer and not much more tbh so words of two syllables or less please.
Thanks in anticipation as ever.

I don't see why not.
You would need to switch the video feed and for that you could use a relay triggered by the 12v feed to the caravan reversing light. That way it would only effect the video routing switch when the 'van is connected.
In fact, that's such a good idea, I think I'll do that myself
Cheers for the idea.

Not sure I'll be able to meet your timeline
It's something that I would just be adding to my long list of things to do but hey, ho - you never know. I think I've got a number plate camera lying around somewhere.

My vans being built in May so I'll have the camera fitted and the cable run done to the front of the van with some spare to reach the 12n socket. I'll then stare at it in a somewhat frightened way until it either does it itself or I follow your step by step instructions that you post.

Do I already have a GVIF module as I have a reversing camera and it plays video? If so could I plug directly into this with some form of switch? FFRR 2017 4.4SDV8 Autobiography. Cost so much I must be mad!

Hi Tintenter
This looks like my kinda stuff/price.
I'll need the complete idiot proof instructions if you're able mate. I saw the pdf of yours for the wiring but really need to know where on the car before I end up with car parts left over.
Cheers

Having read the descriptions of the kit you advised Tintenter it's starting to make sense (a bit).
My question is that the reversing light feed for the caravan is there even if the caravans not isn't it?
And whats the male to male SMB adapter for? Why do I need the FAKRA cable?
I need to understand why I can't just slip the switcher between the existing camera and the screen, using the existing connection from the existing camera?
Cheers

Hi fisherman,
the SMB adaptor is required to convert one of the cables from the D3 shop from female to male, the connection to the existing loom is done in the headlining just about where the rear courtesey light is. there is a joint there which can be split and connections made with the adaptor and 2 cables, the other end of the cables then connect to the switch box, this then allows the box to switch between the car camera and caravan camera feed, the reverse light feed needs to come from the cravan back through the 13 pin plug so it only works when the cravan is connected to switch the box or you could put a manual switch in place . it is very straight forward to do and will fall in to place once you start doing it. This is all getting complicated. I think I'll just look inthe mirror insted. A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

I'm hooked! brilliant idea, if like me you tow more than one trailer you could have a camera on each trailer
Only slight down side is it would not operate when travelling forward as a rear view mirror even with a GVIF, ISTR that rev over rides other video inputs even if the video feed was taken back to the GVIF It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

So putting a bit of thought into your setup
Disco cable (FAKRA) plugs directly into the Nav Screen.
Using the SMB adapter this now plugs into a video cable which runs the length of the car to the output side of the switcher located in the headlining adjacent to the courtesy light.
The existing rev camera plugs into the normal input side as does either the video feed from the caravan camera or a wireless alternative into the priority input.......nope, confused.
Doesn't the switcher go in between the D4 rev camera and the D4 camera video feed to the Nav screen and then just swaps to the aux camera via the priority feed when a live is supplied by the reversing lights on the van?
I think my confusion is the FAKRA lead. Why do I need this if the D4 rev cam has a feed to the Nav screen already? Am I just not switching into the D4 cable which already exists?
Sorry to sound so dumb.
