I often drive along Coronation Road in Bristol. This road has a cycle lane, which I admit isn't the best, but is obviously perfectly usable judging by the amount of cyclists that I see using it. At least once a week I have to follow behind a cyclist who is using the road instead of the cycle lane. I'm not going to endanger them (or my D4) by passing too close to them, so I wait for a suitable gap in the oncoming traffic.

Now this isn't really a big deal and I'm generally a patient soul, but at busy times of the day it can mean that I can't safely overtake for quite some time. This is frustrating when the cyclist has a cycle lane right next to them.

Once, after having followed a cyclist for the whole length of the cycle lane, I did calmly & politely suggest to the cyclist, through my open window, that if he'd have used the cycle lane, it would have sped up the flow of traffic. I got told to "eff off". I just ignored the comment and carried on. I can however see that this could have triggered "road rage" in some people!

Cycle lanes are sometimes full of tyre puncturing crap, but I suspect this guy was trying to prove a point - goes back to my earlier comment - politeness and respect avoids needles confrontations on both sides.

No doubt they are a very small minority, but Bristol does have some very militant cyclists with a holier than thou, we're saving the planet type attitude. Any large 4X4 on the road sends them into a rage.

So it's quite possible that the cyclist I mentioned was intentionally not using the cycle lane. A dangerous game to play with the amount of nutters about.

The cycle path in question is a divided (by markings) pavement. It's probably slower than the road, but shouldn't be any dirtier.

There are some knob road vehicle drivers for sure but nobody wants to hurt a cyclist ...... it seems that ever since the bloody Olympics we have a new breed of militant lycra brigade who almost appear to seek out confrontation. I see this frequently.

A brief perusal of this gallery: http://www.warringtoncyclecampaign.co.uk/facility-of-the-month/ should make clear why a great many cyclists have little time for cycleways, lanes and paths.

Yes but be honest that is in the minority ..perfectly good facility is often ignored. I'm not necessarily blaming cyclists tbh ...I think that proper investment is required although I do note that little comparative funding would ever come from revenues of cyclists themselves. The clever excuse that the motorist pays taxes into the general fund and that doesn't mean investment into road projects is weak whichever way you look at it.

You mean the clever excuse that 'Road tax' was abolished in 1937?

The majority of adult cyclists are also drivers; I cycle about 3,000 miles a year, none of them on cycle paths, and pay VED on four cars - should I pay more still?

Yes... the clever excuse ..it doesn't really matter when it was abolished..... irrespective though current investment for cyclists is largely ignored and whichever way you choose to look at it its a waste.

Should you pay more ? Depends ...if cyclists wish to have facility ...then possibly. Though in my years as a cyclist it wasn't even thought of.

Depends on what sort of investment it is though. Fully segregated cycle paths (usually mixed use paths actually) are very popular, and useful. I've cycled on many old railway paths and they are usually well used and a very whorthwhile investment; I only wish many more sections of disused railway could be more readily converted. I think more attention has to be given to the making of a complete and useful route, rather than bits here and there. A cycle lane on a road is not very effective from any point of view.

Maybe so out in the country and yes I agree investment in old rail lines or river paths is excellent...up here in Surrey in what seems to be the cycling capital of the world since the Olympics we get hoards (in fact "hoards" isn't enough of an expression) of cyclists riding on the roads alongside dual use paths.

On the A3, much of which is 6 lanes and a hard shoulder or dedicated cycle path they want to express their "right" by riding in lane 1 when traffic around them is doing 70 mph .... tbh it's a death wish.

We see growing expressions from militant cyclists encouraging others to "Own" the road even if it goes against the HC which they bleat to others ...and acting as Lycra policemen ...videos of them shouting out to their camera, saying things like "IC1 male driving wearing blue top..a Red Corsa LY52 HAP" Rolling Eyes

I've been a cyclist in my time, I know they are entitled to be there and I do give them every courtesy but certainly around here it is not working and given the growing numbers much greater thought has to go into the interaction with traffic.

Rolling with laughter
Camera-Head clearly didn’t like being dropped by the guy with the rucksack so went hell for leather to catch him, overtaking in a stupid place - deserved the beep - would any normal person behave like that in a car? - no

And someone should tell him that F*ck is spelt with a 'u', not an 'a'

What a first class tool
