Maybe so out in the country and yes I agree investment in old rail lines or river paths is excellent...up here in Surrey in what seems to be the cycling capital of the world since the Olympics we get hoards (in fact "hoards" isn't enough of an expression) of cyclists riding on the roads alongside dual use paths...
Don't get me wrong, I agree completely with what you're saying. TBH, I think, where very little can be done to create a decent cycle route, it is also safer if we don't try to decrease the danger too much from these situations as, clearly, some cyclists need to gain a bit of respect for traffic and dumbing it down won't help.

On the A3, much of which is 6 lanes and a hard shoulder or dedicated cycle path they want to express their "right" by riding in lane 1 when traffic around them is doing 70 mph .... tbh it's a death wish.
Very much along the same lines as a fair few walkers who refuse to move off a main road when there's a perfectly good verge next to them.
We also get quite a few "roadies" here that choose to ride on the main roads even though there's a perfectly good alternative via some quiet back roads. They must be abolutely mental to choose to ride there. For this sort of occasions I have my gopro on my helmet every time Im cycling on the road.
Nothing bad so far, but few near misses.
I clearly remember years ago on my driving test, situation with cyclist on the road. If I would not keep 3ft distance between cyclist and the car the examiner would fail me. You just never know if cyclist will swerve around a man hole or drain and suddenly move away from kerb towards the car. That was one of the reasons.
Im trying to keep to that rule every time as this is how I would like to be treated when on the bike myself.

I think he must have suffered concussion, or is a bigger man than all of us, as he must have posted the video himself!
I would have certainly deleted that!Andy

Speaking to The Standard today, Mr Algar admitted that he should have signalled when overtaking.
He said: "I should have signalled and I usually do, but this one time I was going at speed and just didn’t think."

That video beautifully sums up the stupidity of some cyclists.
He overtook in at an island/constriction in the road without looking behind.
"He said: "I should have signalled and I usually do, but this one time I was going at speed and just didn’t think."
No, you should have turned your head to see what was behind you, forget signalling. Had it been a 40t artic you would not be here now. Complete absence of any road sense whatsoever.
Mirror (or look over the shoulder), signal, manoeuvre.
Not signal and what the I'll do it anyway.Tony
