Wow Jetlag what a thread and what an amazing trip...

Off to SA in Feb to see SWMBO's family - little trip to Cape town Vis Jeffries Bay from Joburg
planned (gotta get a surf in) but unfortunately in her old mans car... bit far to take the disco from the UK for a 3 week holiday.

Loving the MODS! They Lamp protector is such a simple yet effective idea - Was it any good? any nasty stone chips that could have wrecked the light cluster?

AVO30, the light guards worked an absolute treat and have protected the headlights from damage, stones and branches. I highly recommend them. There were no chips but I did see stones hitting them as well as branches and thinking "Hope they are ok".

I ordered some industrial strength clear Velcro to update my headlight protector mod. It makes it easier to remove the guards and to clean them so I HIGHLY recommend doing it this way.

One part I did not share about the adventure is that a week before the trip started a woman drove into me as I was turning. I was shattered that a year's planning has gone down the drain and the trip has to be cancelled.

The accident happened on Saturday and we were set to depart the following Saturday.

On Sunday I spent the entire day thinking what I am going to do and how I am going to go about this.

On Monday morning I went to the panel beater where the car was taken to and begged and pleased and explained my story. They agreed to help me and get the car ready by Friday to do the trip and when the trip is done take the car back so that they can finish the repair. Now that is what you call OVER THE TOP service.

If you look carefully at my photos from the trip i posted earlier you can see that the rear door didnt look right and the front door didnt sit 100% straight

The total damage to the car is R188,000 which is about GBP 10,000

Hi, great thread, and thanks for sharing. Thumbs Up I have a few questions if you don't mind?

How did your tyres hold out during your trip?
Did you have any punctures or any troubles with the side walls?
Also did you find the extra 4 jerry cans enough, or could you have done with less?

A group of us are planning a trip out there in September next year, and I'm interested in more detail on the above?

Thanks
John

Hi John,

Thanks so much for the comments!

How did your tyres hold out during your trip?
I have to be honest and say I am extremely impressed with the tyres, they held out really well and I did not have any punctures on the trip. There was a lady at Sossusvlei that lost 3 tyres on the trip to the same camp as us. In some places my passengers really thought that I was going to lose a tyre as some of the obstacles I drove over were pretty hectic. I will however always carry 2 spare wheels with me on such a trip. If you dont have 2 alloys, 1 spare wheel and then a spare tyre that can be fitted to the alloy if needed - there are always plenty of tyre places at the spots that are known to damage tyres.

None what so ever

Also did you find the extra 4 jerry cans enough, or could you have done with less?
2 Jerry Cans were more than sufficient for the trip we did. We did however stop at every fuel station (every 200km or so) in Botswana to fill up as there were reports that from time to time Diesel is not available so rather safe than sorry.

Let me know when and where you are going, I am always up for adventure and meeting fellow forumers so could join you for a couple of days Smile

Thanks for the information. I’m already running the Goodyear Duratrac on 19’s, but was wondering if I needed to change to 18’s due to the roads out there. I’ll replace with new 19 inch Duratrac’s before I leave. I have a rear wheel carrier, so always carry 2 spares with me.

Just got to see how I can get 2 jerry cans on the roof rack next to my roof tent. Thumbs Up

I was also worried about doing the trip in 19's but all was good. If you want to do Van Zyl's pass or other really rocky trails then 18's would probably be a better bet.

I have always thought that manufacturing Jerry Can side mounts such as the above would work super well on the Disco is roof rack space is an issue.

I would mount them to the roof rack and let them hang over the rear window and then use a suction mount to keep them against the body.

Just an idea
