My apologies for the lack of update.
All the kit has been purchased and is currently in Storage. Vehicle Preparations will begin on 28 - 30 Nov, 5 - 7 December ready for departure on 13 December 2014.
The current plan for the roof rack is as follows:
- Spare wheel
- 4 x Jerry Cans (Or maybe 2 - will decide nearer to the time)
- 2 x 40L water tanks
I am conscious of not "overloading" the roof rack. The rails have been upgraded so can easily carry the weight.
My current focus is on the camping trailer, it has been stripped to the shell and has been sent in to be resprayed. The inside has been rubberized and I have been planning the electrical system.
Below is the final version of how the electrical system will look - the intention is for it to be completely based on 12V.

Look like a great trip!
I've driven from Durban to Vredenburg - past Cape Town once - and once a round trip through Namibia. Both were great, but Namibia was wilder and felt more like "Africa" than the part of South Africa we were in.
Our preparations were no where near your. A phone call to Europcar booked a Hilux with an extra spare tire a couple of plane tickets and of we went.
The broad gravel roads where you are allowed to do 100 kph are crazy, and we encountered very little traffic, some days one car on 150 km.
a little video in January, I don't think the dj in the radio has a calendar :

Thanks so much!
I agree with you, the dirt roads in Namibia are crazy - we were travelling at 120km/h at some parts and had guys fly past us.
I did lose a back window due to a stone ricochet from the trailer but alas all is good

The elephant experience was absolutely amazing!
As we got to our camp site, we decided to have a look around. Before we knew it there was an elephant approaching us. First he walked to my car, then he came towards us to have a look and then walked away.

We didn't stick to the 100 kph limit either we only saw the police on the road from the Airport in Windhoek to the city, but you really had to be alert on the gravel roads, the road could be great for 30 km and suddenly there would be an inverted speedbump where water flows during heavy rain
And a couple of times when there was water on the road and all the tyretracks went around outside the road - we followed it, and at one of the hotels the owner told us the water was 1.5 m deep
We were carefull with the stones when pacing other cars, mostly slowing down and keeping as far to the left as possible.2007 D3 2.7 SE Automatic
