Really sorry to hear this Ted.

I had a friend in similar circumstances 20+ years ago. He was initially not allowed to drive, but after a period of time was allowed to resume driving.

If this is what happens to you, then don't forget to clear driving with your insurers.

Good luck, we are all rooting for you.

Regards

Nigel

Unless someone forcibly takes your licence off you, I'd suggest keeping hold of it.

You can choose not to drive. When insurance etc. need renewing, you may have to change things around but as long as you're not driving I'd say no law is being broken.

My brother was told he couldn't drive last June and it would be for 3 months. He surrendered his licence. Still not got it back ... he's well enough to drive but the bureaucracy is mind-numbing.

Yes it is self imposed at present and the consultant said to keep it that way

So sorry to hear your news Ted.

Regarding driving, I had to surrender my licence in August 2018, following my first ever epileptic seizure. As this was my first, as long as I was clear for 6 months I could apply again for my licence, which I did and I got my licence back in February 2018. Only to have another on Good Friday, following that I am now on epilepsy medication and have been seizure since, my consultant told me a few weeks ago I can apply for my licence again ahead of the April anniversary.

In terms of insurance, they changed me over to a non driving policy holder, but when it came to renewal, I could no longer insure the car myself (not sure what would happen if there was no one else to be the policy holder), so my wife now insures it (at considerably greater cost), then hopefully in April, all being well I will become a named driver, although not sure yet about me being the main driver if that will cause an issue, but come renewal I can then put everything right again.

Not sure how they class a tumour, but for epilepsy you get free prescriptions, free bus pass, and you are entitled to a disabled persons railcard.

APlan were very good sorting things out and apart from one person at the DVLA that told me the wrong information about what would happen when I got my licence back, they were really helpful as well. Although their initial letter really annoyed me about how they had accepted my request to surrender my licence, as if they were doing me a favour, as if I hadn’t, they would have just taken it anyway!

Best of luck with your treatment.
 Andy

Thanks Andy very useful information! hope all goes well for you.

I start the radiology zapping tomorrow and it is five days a week for 4 weeks after which new assessments are made. My sight problem is the tumour swelling presses on the optic nerve which cause's vision impairment but not always so bad that one has to give up driving-- we will see.

I don’t know wether you’re getting Chemo as well, but I’ve know friends who’ve had that and it tends to give people what’s called “Chemo Head”, a fuzzy brain which misjudges time, distance, judgement for a few months after having received it.

They were never told about it and drove, totally unaware of the condition, thinking they were great and having the odd prang along the way.
