TOO MANY PIGS
sad to watch the media show many farms struggling with more stock than they can handle...think there will be an outcry if a mass cull is activated...many bacon buttys wasted

Its even sader and more stupid becuase we are importing meat from the EU becuase we can't process it because the abatoir workers and butchers have gone back to the EU and no one wants to do it in the UK.

Haha…
This does slightly annoy me….not you moo! …. Just the situation.
There a plenty of people who would work in these industries but we have relied on the foreign legion for so long that people don’t even know of the sectors that require people injections….. it’s about time for drives to recruit in the sectors that are needed…
Lorry driving or abattoirs are just 2 topical ones…..I’m sure there are many more….. I wonder how many are claiming unemployment benefit that may enjoy a job in the areas previously occupied by foreign labour.
It’s incredible how it’s cheaper and quicker to bring over labour from abroad rather than utilise or incentivise our own….I know that’s a simplistic view to a way deeper issue but I’m sure a halfway point is possible…it will take time that’s the problem - as everyone wants an instant fix these days.A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

Take a look at the U.K. unemployment rate in the 10 years prior to the Covid pandemic.
Then consider the fact that during that time period successive governments chose not to control or manage EU Freedom of Movement as they could have done. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I would hazard a guess the EU workers back home will tell us to stick our problem where the sun does not shine!

Tell me. Could the FOM rules have stopped the exploitation of cheap labour from other EU member states? Yes or no.?

Could you define exploitation
Surely there is a rate of pay for a job that is at our above minimum wageMike

You tell me. If the local market rate was being paid, why was there a reliance on cheap Eastern European labour?
If I am wrong, then there was no exploitation. An ex-Disco3 / FFRR owner ......

I think you must be confusing the abhorrent and illegal exploitation of illegal immigrants from outside the EEA with EU FOM.
The governments of EU member countries have always set there own minimum wages and individual employers are free to pay a wage above this minimum.
The fact is that the vast majority of employers did not deliberately seek to fill vacancies with migrant workers. They employed EEA migrants when they were the best or, sometimes, the only available candidates.
Before the disastrous decision to end FOM, among the reasons given by U.K. employers for why an EEA migrant might be the best candidate for a job, were:
• the necessary skills are scarce among the UK-born workforce;
• migrants often have a higher motivation to work so are more productive and reliable;
• migrants are prepared to do jobs in difficult conditions that the UK-born workforce
are not interested in.
• low unemployment means a low supply of UK-born workers.
All of the above is verified by the current labour shortages across many sectors. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I'm told that the abattoir near here (previously staffed mostly by Eastern Europeans) is having prisoners bussed-in from Swansea prison every morning (and back again in the evening) to get the work done.

Proof, not that it was needed, that the local workforce is not able to absorb the loss of the EU abattoir workers. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
