I wonder how D1 and 2 owners managed without a split tailgate
My one has been nothing but problems, had to slam it shut when I first got it, adjusted by the dealer, it doesn't sit flush with the lower part and now it creaks badly. It's a complete pain when trying to reach into the boot. Handy for some but for me good riddance.
Having said that I've cancelled my deposit for a D5 in favour of a 3 year old FFRR SDV8, hopefully around the start off next year if not I will keep my current Disco until a FFRR comes into budget.

I've had numerous D1 & D2's and too be honest the side opening door, being huge was just as much a problem as a large single rising tailgate, as seems to be the trend. In a carpark (confined space) such a single laage door is always problematic.
As per my previously reply, I found the dog's collars would scratch the bodywork around the door opening, as they strain to see around the "corner", whereas on a stickout tailgate they sit further out and can easily see, and are a way from the bodywork.

Is the FFD5 really a 2017 Ford Explorer
So if as it appears the new FFD5 shares a common platform as the 2017 Ford Explorer, and previously the D4 shared a common platform as the previous Ford Exporer, it stands that the (boot) capacities of the 2017 Ford Exploer will be almost identical to the new FFD5.
Too be fair (and I was fearing the worst!), if these dimensions/capacities for the 2017 new Ford Explorer are close, if not the same, as for the FFD5 then the boot may be a usable size. Lets just hope that the "utility platform" doesn't steal valuable space.

The concept's "event platform" looks like the sort of thing that'll go wrong if not regularly used: I can see the mechanism seizing once it gets crud built up in it. Also, where is the rear recovery point going to be with that lot under the rear? What about the tow bar? My guess would be that the "event platform" precludes anything else below the bumper.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Is that really a fact that the both cars share the platform?
Couldn't find anything about it. The Explorer moved from body on frame to unibody in 2011 and used the "Ford D4" platform, which has nothing to do with the Discovery 4.

They are copying design and ideas like terrain response - but the way I see it is that they use their own platform.
At least that's what I could find out...
So we can not take any clues between the 2017 Ford Explorer and the FFD5...-colour coded wheel arches

Looks like it will be the discovery vision concept as we know it on the outside.
Interior will be more "standard" than on the concept car.-colour coded wheel arches

Interesting. I have to slam mine too, but I'd never asked for it to be adjusted as I'd always assumed that the tight fit was what stopped it from creaking when the body twists...
I've spent some time on Autotrader "dream" shopping for a used FFRR; in my case, it's never going to happen, but what a car! They don't half hold their value though...
Good luck in finding what you're looking for
My one needed 3 slams sometimes or it would still come up on the dash "tailgate open" which didn't happen with me previous D4, it will get looked at come its first service. The dealer did say a few cars needed fine tuning.
As with the FFRR, they are still commanding high prices, the cheapest I've seen is £56k for a 3 year old SDV8 Vogue SE though I would take a TDV6, I'm not in any rush the Disco suits me at the moment but a FFRR is definitely on the shopping list.

While the roof spoiler looks good it is a pain in that it greatly raises the height required to open the tailgate.
Not so good when fitting it in some of our garages!
Hard to say for sure but it does look like a one piece tailgate.
Looks narrower in the roof width.2014 SDV6 HSE White, LLAMS Height Controller, Tinted Glass, Tuff Ant Sliders and 18" steel wheels, Safari Snorkel, Rhino Rack Platform, ARB Air Compressor, Custom Drawer and storage unit -http://www.box.com/s/jem0ilac3cner2mexq64 UHF CB, 4x4 Intellegence RWC, 120ltr Long range tank, Rock Sliders and Compressor protection plate Beanie grill, De Tango.

Both my MY14 & MY15 tailgates required adjustment by the dealer. No slamming needed if they're adjusted to fit properly.
P***s poor that they're not adjusted and tested properly at the factory, IMO.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
