Show me a refined 4 pot diesel, end of. The reason the D4 is so silky smooth is because of that straight 6 diesel, there's no arguing that a 4 pot will remove that.

Even if a manufacturer does eventually manage to get a 4 pot to produce torque figures anywhere near the 6, it'll sound like a bag of spanners.

Keep the thread on track, I can sense a full blown torque VS bhp argument coming..

Thought it was a V6, not a straight 6. Whistle

Sorry, but thats not the case.

The relationship between BHP and torque is worth reading up on as its regularly misunderstood.

The relationship is simple: Power = Torque (Force) X RPM (Speed) - hence the power figure alone is not entirely meaningless. Don't get me wrong, torque is obviously needed to get things moving, but the torque from the engine is not the same as at the wheels; it's multiplied by the drivetrain, so with suitably paired gearing, a petrol/smaller engine will get the job done, but naturally will feel quite different. Thumbs Up

I'd bet on there being a 2 litre diesel version with single speed transfer box for the school run crowd. I'd expect the 3 litre from the RRS with two speed transfer box. Non-UK markets will probably get the 3 litre supercharged petrol with a 2 litre petrol too to keep the overall emissions of the D5 range down.

The 4.4 SDV8 would be nice though... Thumbs Up

Isn't the RRS2 fitted with single speed transfer box as standard? Or is that market specific?

I think the single speed is standard and the two speed comes as part of the off-road extras pack and is I think about £800 extra.

Above correct.

Saw them fitting the gearboxes at recent LR tour, quiet a difference in size and weight between the the 2 versions.

Wonder if it is some get round of the emissions tests and lower co2 offering the lighter single box as standard as not aware that those models fitted with it have a higher tax band

Only RRS2 HSE is single range as standard but two-speed can be added for £600. For £3500 you can add the two-speed and torque vectoring etc. (this is an active rear diff in effect, I believe).

RRS2 HSE with "Dynamic" in the name has two-speed transfer box as standard (along with the torque vectoring etc.). The 4.4SDV8 and the 5.0SC are "Dynamic" as standard.

I expect D5 to follow this sort of scheme too. I guess it makes sense for the majority of LR's customers these days. Hardly any Discos, RRS, FFRR will ever go further off road than a horse trials car park. Having said that, most will likely be sold as "Dynamic" anyway so perhaps it's a moot point.

Needs a PHEV option at 49g/km to grab a chunk of the company car market. Volvo T8's are the only decent 7 seat AWD that are reasonable under BIK.

I saw one in the flesh, albeit in camoflage, recently and have to admit that if you like the thought of an enlarged disco sport then's it's ok, but wasn't my cup of tea, but let's hope it's a grower.

I have vowed that i will only have cars that have six cylinders or more, or none at all, i.e. electric, going forward because that's what i like, so the disco, bmw i3 and v8 powered Jeep CJ7 that i have suit me just fine for now but I am always open to what might come, I once thought electric cars were pointless but am now a big fan.
