Demo'd the XC90 with 2.0 litre diesel and was shocked how much they've got out the engine, certainly didn't hang about!

I think it's reached the stage where LR are starting to show off more of the cars details. Looks too much like the RRS for my liking.

I would expect the D5 to also come in a hybrid version.

BHP figures alone are meaningless. The torque figure is everything, which is why the 2.0 litre diesel with 400Nm will always be a poor relation of a 3.0 with 600Nm. Even then, without seeing the torque curves on a dyno chart, even the torque figure can be misleading - the 3.0 is likely to produce its maximum torque lower down the rev range and over a broader range of revs than a 2.0 is ever going to manage.

3.0 V6's will disappear for sure, emissions legislation will see to that, but why trade a perfectly good V6 for a 2.0 long before we have no choice and were lumbered with them?

There is a review of the XC90 in this month's Shooting Gazette and the journalist says that it would not be a suitable replacement for a D4 for several reasons, towing ability is but one. Thumbs Up

2.0 with hybrid assistance may be ok, surely that would have the Umph but that said not sure for constant towing. I was hoping for a v6 hybrid at some point to get daily driving performance if not better than we have today and then hybrid assistance when you need more performance or this economy malarkey.

From a shooting point of view it was never a contender, it just doesn't have the off-road ability.

If JLR are putting a 2.0 diesel and 3.0 V6 diesel in the F-Pace then I'm sure the D5 will feature one.

Volvo tried to get me into a new XC90 and I was very impressed until I found it was a 2.0 and could not see it pulling the TA caravan suitably so walked away.

just had a quick squint at the f pace build configurator. The 3.0 v6 diesel gives out 300ps and they also offer the 3.0 supercharged petrol giving 380ps wonder if they will offer those in that tune in D5 UK spec 8)

Mind you doesnt the RRS sdv6 variants all kick out 300hp or more and 700Nm surely given the same underpinnings this would be an option? The hybrid RRS has some good stats.

I'd bet on there being a 2 litre diesel version with single speed transfer box for the school run crowd. I'd expect the 3 litre from the RRS with two speed transfer box. Non-UK markets will probably get the 3 litre supercharged petrol with a 2 litre petrol too to keep the overall emissions of the D5 range down.

The 4.4 SDV8 would be nice though... Thumbs Up

To expand on the above, BHP is the figure that indicates outright capability. HP is what gets the work done; torque tells you how it's going to be done. A powerful petrol engine is just as capable of towing as a diesel, but it needs to rev faster. That will be counteracted with correct gearing but will mean lower efficiency. In short, torque indicates the efficiency and general feel of towing. Thumbs Up

Don't be too sure that larger engines will disappear so readily. The emmissions focus as regards the ICE is on particulates and NOx etc. and such pollutants are produced more in a small highly strung engine running hard than a more relaxed large engine with an easier life. There also comes a point where fuel consumption follows the same trend too. Wink

Sorry, but thats not the case.

The relationship between BHP and torque is worth reading up on as its regularly misunderstood.
