The more worrying aspect is that people in authority are giving out the wrong advice. We were told is was not required if we were towing for our own use. Clearly that seems wrong, but we actually checked as it had been mentioned on here before.
There are also government sites which don't have the 50km rule, one I copied in a earlier post was directly from a link the the government website and it makes no mention of 50km. If you then click on the full document the 50kmmrule is there.
So it is a bit worrying that you can still get in trouble even if you ask for clarification to make sure you don't.
It would also mean needing a operators licence potentially

Yes and don't forget a DCPC also, I have been in this game for over 15 years and the misinformation is rife. Some grey areas in legislation when it come to the law and DVSA interpretation of it.

I work for a large scottish based bus company, we have been running long distance services without using our tachos for the past 2 years. Appearntly there is a loophole in the law that allows the route registration to be split therefor each part comes under UK domestic rules (50km) rather than EU rules, so long as it's not advertised as a continuous service eg destination screens read - Kirkcaldy for Kincardine and Glasgow, which is where the routes are split. They have been battling it through the courts for the past 2 years. Seems like it's paid off if its to increase to 100km.
The drivers hours/tachos/licensing is a minefield. I've fancied going it alone with a 22 seat plus driver Mercdes sprinter minicoach but it's just a headache, as has been said you get all different info regarding tachos and licensing.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

I was going to say your wrong about the operators licence But. I looked into it a year ago and as long as the towing vehicle does not exceed 3500kg you dont need oner but you do need a tacho. Having just read the new document that bit has disappeared so maybe you do.D4

Changes may not apply to us Disco 3 owners
Like Stew 46 and others on this forum I use my Disco 3 to tow a big plant trailer 8)
Relying on the 50km from operating base exemption to have a Tachograph fitted....
The DVSA Moving On Blog with link added by Oswiperus explains the changes very well
Make sure you read and don't ignore the part that says:
" – used to carry goods and which are propelled by natural or liquefied gas or electricity"
Most of us have diesel powered D3s.
Bet there are not many natural gas or electric D3s about
I would hazard a guess that not many members have LPG converted V8 models
If you do have an LPG converted D3 and if you an subjected to an enforcement check, then you no doubt be required to provide the relevant LPG conversion certificate
Interesting thread which I will watch with interestCheers, Dave in Essex

I have been asking many people that should know the answer but nobody gave a clear and right answer. The only clear answer came from the institute that checks technical states of cars in belgium. The guy answered straight away and was sure about his answer. His answer makes sense and pleases me, so i willingly accepted this version as the right version.
The ec directive concerns only commercial traffic. This means only commercial vehycles : trucks, vans or cars registred for mixed usage. The ec directive does never concern passenger cars even is the tow weight is over 3,5t. My car is registred as a pennger car, not as commercial or mixed vehicle, even if it is company-owned.
So my opinion is no, no tacho needed.
And very happy about that Some people get by
With a little understanding
Some people get by
With a whole lot more
I dont know
Why you gotta be so undemanding
