Buying a D4 without seeing... |
|
So, found a D4 Im interested in, but its some 200 miles away. Its from a Landrover Dealer and Im now very tempted to buy it "blind".
What do people think of this? Im going to ask for a video and photos etc for any damage, scuffs etc, and the service history, but what else should I ask to see?
Any and all advice is appreciated, its a big purchase and Im more than a little terrified, but been waiting ages to find a D4 that fits everything I want...

Is it a franchised dealer? If so they may bring it to your nearest branch, or how about a trusted forum member look at it for you
Regards

I went to a Franchise dealer 200 miles away for my used D3, checked it out ,decided to buy and they delivered it for £20. Just asked me to drop the driver off at local rail station. Surely any decent garage would come to some accommodation.

I've done it twice with two examples of 1 year old Freelanders and regretted neither. Both were sold and delivered sight unseen. Provided that you have the option to pull out if the car doesn't match their description, then they are taking a bigger chance than you are. Both of mine involved a round trip for their driver of around 800 miles each, so it's very much in their interests to be accurate in their descriptions. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as “second” cars 🙄

I bought a 2011 D4 blind from a Landover dealer. Put everything in place beforehand on the basis it could all be cancelled if I decided not to take it. However as it had a 2 year warranty it was going to be very unlikely I wouldn't have taken it.
Once it was all in place I got a lift to the dealer and inspected the car. Glad to say I did buy it.

I bought my 2011 blind from Land Rover dealer, they sent me pictures which looked good so I put £500 deposit on it with the agreement that if I didn't like it on arrival they would return in full. Then flew from Exeter to Manchester Where Land Rover collected me and took me to dealer, all was good done the deal and drove it home. All went extremely well and wouldn't hesitate to do it again

I'm on the fence with this, having bought my D4 3 weeks ago unseen. I'm flat out at work and wanted a particular colour/spec and couldn't find one near me (my location doesn't help!) so I bit the bullet and bought my car without viewing it first.
There has been a couple of issues with the car so far, little niggly things and an engine problem that hopefully the warranty will cover. I think if I'd have had the luxury of being able to view and test the car then I would have been able to at least have those niggles sorted as part of the deal, I'm now trying to do this retrospectively, and in reality the trader I bought it from has me over a barrel, although that's not to say that he's not going to be honourable, that remains to be seen, but in terms of peace of mind, I'd rather be dealing with my local LR dealer and be able to take it to them for warranty work. I don't regret my decision as it was a 'needs must' thing, but if I wasn't held to the colour/spec I was then I wouldn't have bought 'blind'.
Overall, I think when spending sums of money like this (i.e. £20-£30k) it's best to try and stick with a main dealer and buy as local as possible, as much as a warranty is nice, it's far better to have a LR warranty if poss!

You don't have much choice when they come straight from the factory 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I've done it with different marques in the past and I would do it with LR if needed to. Just as long as it is agreed in writing that the sale is on condition of acceptance of the vehicle on collection/delivery (and the deposit was also paid by credit card to add protection under the CCA). I personally would only do it with Manufacturer approved vehicles however!
