2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Manual Zermatt SilverDiscovery 3

Mine isn't firing up every time, I would say about every other time but sometimes locks out. If I run it on the test it normally runs up ok. I'm guessing that's the combustion chamber is going to be bunged up and that's my cause? I'll take it off and clean it anyway but is there anything else that could be causing it? When it runs up it runs well and no problems once it's going. Also I run 2SO in mine, I've heard this can bung them up quicker, is that true?

Thanks

Pete.

I've not seen enough to make a call on the 2sO, but I ran my D3 on it and my combustion chamber remained clear. It may even help to keep it clean; it certainly didn't do it any harm.

I use 2SO and this was mine when taken apart to clean. I got very little crud out of it and on balance did not really need to do it.

First of all big thanks to Robbie for the great guide!

So yesterday I went to strip and clean mine FBH, but …
unfortunately after removing the ceramic top, one of the thin paper like gaskets break into pieces.

My investigation in the web was not successful; the only spare I could find was the LR004141 Seal Heater Set or the whole burner

The gaskets can be purchased …

Does someone know where I can buy spares – they look like the inner layers of graphite gaskets?
Is it possible to relinquish to one of the gaskets or can it made out of a standard graphite gasket?

Yes you can cut your own gaskets as the tolerances are rather generous. The only place I could get them was a boat yard but making your own makes a lot of sense given the simple design.

Investigations around gaskets had following results:

graphite gaskets have a temperature range up to 550°C
I suppose a gasket made out of mica is the better choice - temperature range up to 1000°C

I found the following product
http://www.frenzelit.com/en/gaskets/gasket...ovamica-10

Maybe I can order some example to test cutting out of a sheet and forming it in the right shape to fit
to the burner.

I’ll keep you informed about the results …

Well a 1000 deg C should do it as all the aluminium will have melted away by 660. Laughing

I think graphite would be just fine.

Many thanks for this concise guide.

I revived an non starting FBH from my Range Rover today for the cost of a seal kit and can of carb cleaner. Thanks to all that contributed

Hi Guys,

I have a failing FBH currently with error code 05 "Flame was detected prior to combustion" on my 55 plate Disco 3 according to my Altox controller. Id like to follow Robbie's excellent service guide and give it a good clean out. I'd also like to jury rig a test bench (as seen many times on you tube) to fire it up and check it running prior to refitting then finding out its not working, any ideas what I need to do to have one up and running on my bench???? Initial thoughts are -

    1. A Bench - check Rolling with laughter
    2. 12v power source - check
    3. Diesel can (fuel) - check
    4. Fuel Pipes (not sure of diameter, anyone help ??)
    5. Water pipes & bucket of water for coolant (not sure of diameter, anyone help??)
    6. fuel pump (is this within the FBH or need to be installed and powered separately inline?? If so maybe cheap one on ebay??). Also would this be a DP40 or DP41 part number?
    7. FBH wire connector (or can I simply connect to the relevant pins somehow??). Is this even possible or do I need a switch?. Can someone please help me with what pins I need to wire to and where (ie + - on battery etc)
    8. Laptop w/ webasto software - check
    9. Diagnostics lom and USB to OBD K cable - just ordered so check
    10 O-ring set (LR004141) - to be ordered
11 ... anything else anyone can think of ...

If anyone's done this in their own work bench and has any photos and rough guide to help me out with this it'd be much appreciated... Smile. I'm looking to buy the parts I need this week so I can hopefully get it serviced and tested next week

I'm a bit of a newbie to this but happy to give it a bash so please be gentle... Rolling Eyes

Thanks Thumbs Up
Bob

The FBH fuel pump is a specific metering pump powered and controlled by a PWM signal from the FBH itself. It will need to be part of your rig, either taken from your vehicle (lives underneath, roughly below the driver's seat) or purchased.

Thanks for replying Robbie... will take a look into getting one, would you happen to know if it would be the DP40 or DP41 for an old 5 plate Disco3's FBH?
Cheers

The D3 pump is the DP40.

To add to your recently purchased diagnostic loom (thanks by the way!) you would need the following:

FBH power connector: http://www.disco3.co.uk/shop/fbh-power-con...v-p74.html (choose the terminals+seals option)

Wire this to a battery via a fuse (20A is used on the car, 10A is probably OK for test bench as the FBH plus the coolant pump is around 50W continuous at full load). Pin 1 positive, Pin 2 negative

FBH fuel pump connector: http://www.disco3.co.uk/shop/fbh-fuel-pump...l-p73.html

Blue wire to the pin on the blue wire on the diagnostic loom, black wire to the battery negative.

I am happy to make this with longer leads if needed, and provide a mating terminal to match the diagnostic loom pin. I can also supply a waterproof 15A rated fuse holder.

Just let me know what you need Smile
