Intermittent Handrake Fault |
|
I've had my Disco 3 back from the garage less than a week, after an initial suspension and major electrical fault, and £2k lighter...
There is now an intermittent handrake fault.
The yellow warning bulb comes on after you've driven a mile or so, you turn the ignition off and back on and it clears itself.
Its been back into the garage, LR Specialist, and they adivsed that it is fault with a sensor within the handbrake unit, its not an issue apart from the light coming on.
The only way to clear it is to fit a replacement handbrake unit @ circa £500 + £300 labour!
Am I missing somethng?
Has there been this issue before with an easier fix?
Any clues / assistance would be greatly appreciated..
I must admit my love / trust in it is being seriously tested....
Thanks,

You need to ask the garage what fault codes they have to make them thing that.
Pete. IID, webasto software and workshop facility's available.

Thanks guys, it's been in at a local LR indie - they had it for 4.1/2 weeks for air suspension and then subsequent electrical faults!
It was in with them again yesterday for the hand brake fault, it comes on after a couple of miles, if you then turn the ignition off it clears it.
They're the ones who have advised the option is to replace the handbrake unit, although they have advised that there is not an issue with the warning light being on as there isn't a problem with the handbrake and to just drive with it on....
I'm tempted to try another indie, any other recommendations for Surrey / Berkshire?

If the light comes on it will bring a code into the memory you need to know what that is then someone will be able to help you a bit more/I just did my hand brake modual but that was because the dam thing was screeching and locking up and i thought that and the wires were the only real problem with them Discovery 3 se gone

Ideally you need to complete your profile correctly so we know if you have a manual or an automatic.
If it's a manual, my money is on XY Sensor calibration and nothing to do with the EPB module at all.

Thanks chaps,
I'll try and get the fault code, although I've given up with my local indie...
It is a manual, it's the poverty spec vehicle...
If it is the XY Sensor calibration, is that a relative easy fix?

Is one gear position indication slow coming up as well, and the light coming on after a certain number of gear changes, its most likely to be the XY sensor . Very common especially on early manuals.

A second opinion?
Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, the fault reporting system on these cars is very temperamental, and something that is simple and cheap to fix can appear to be some catastrophic failure.
A IID diagnostic tool, coupled with advice from people on this forum could save you a lot of money in the long run. 2007 Land Rover LR3 4.0L V6

So, it's sounding very much like an XY sensor issue rather than an EPB issue.
It's an easy mistake to make; The amber EPB light comes on and "Park Brake Fault" displays in the Information Centre on mine, leading you to think it is actually a "Park Brake Fault".
I've probably seen this 5 or 6 times in the last 9 years on my own D3.
The XY sensor is the little black box that sits on top of the gearbox to tell the car which gear it's in. It also controls whether or not your reverse lights come on. Do your reverse lights come on when you select reverse and the fault is showing? I guess your Base 7 Seater doesn't have rear parking sensors? If it does, you've possibly noticed that your rear parking sensors also don't work?
You can try to recalibrate the XY sensor but it sounds as though it's a slightly bigger problem if it keeps reoccurring. Have a read at this thread:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic46472.html
Quite a few other members describe their symptoms here and there's a quick and easy fix for recalibrating the XY Sensor also listed. I've included it here if you can't be bothered to read the thread:
Stevie B wrote:
1) Find a long straight and quiet section of road.
2) Select LOW Ratio.
3) Reverse for about 200 yards or until you get the beep and the R on the dash gear number indicator. And then a tiny bit more for good luck. Stop, then...
4) Go forwards in 1st until number appears. Clutch pedal must be fully raised each time.
5) Then up through the Gears waiting for each of the numbers to appear. Do not skip any gears!
6) Stop at 6th, back into neutral, switch off engine.
7) After a brief rest, I took a couple of minutes just to make sure all the bad ju ju was gone and to have a quick wee as it was just all too exciting.
8) Restart and select High Ratio and you're on your way..
In the 9 years I've owned a manual D3, I've noticed a few things can trigger this fault to appear:
1) Going over speed bumps/significant bumps in the road
2) Accidentally slipping the clutch at (motorway) speed
3) Clutch slipping due to excessive wear
It's possible that you have a fault with your XY sensor itself (which will need replacing) or your clutch is worn to the point where it needs replacing.
Let us know how you get on anyway.

Thanks all.
So I went on my test drive and followed all of the instructions, interestingly as soon as the EPB fault comes on Gear No.1 and R are available on the dashboard.
Unfortunately it only cleared the fault for a couple of miles rather than permanently.
I think I need to take it back in and get them to read the fault code again...
I'll be back with an update later this week...
