Increased engine noise

Hi,

Does anyone have any thoughts on the apparently increased engine noise on my 06my TDV6 Auto? Since the last visit to the stealer, the diesel "knock" seems more pronounced (coincidence?). From outside the car at tickover it seems much more diesely Exclamation Previously I always thought the engine sounded almost like a slightly noisy petrol lump.

The stealer had the car to do the recall work on the oil in brake servo issue and a 45,000 mile service (car's done 13,000 though). There's some new servo plumbing but I can't see anything else out of the ordinary.

Is the engine very sensitive to oil level? I see it's about halfway between full and low on the virtually unreadable dipstick.

If it's fe***d, first respondent to confirm that gets it for nowt - oh sorry I meant gets nowt Laughing

Thanks guys.

Could be the oil level. I know the oil pumps can make more noise than normal as I remember reading a TSB on the subject a while back. just one possibility. What oil grade was used at last serivice - do you have the old invoice?

Is this your first major work on the car at an LR dealer since getting the car?
My diesel/tappet noise went away completely after an engine management software upgrade, any chance yours was updated too and overwrote a tuned map or something?

Transgenic tomato anyone?

engine noise still there

Thanks guys for the responses. I haven't seen them until now due to not being able to access the site.

Oil was Mobil 1, but now changed to Castrol Magnatec - all still the same on the noise front Sad

The increase in noise came about as a result of the first visit to a L-R dealer (well spotted stapldm Thumbs Up ). It had only seen an independent specialist up to then, but he had no Testbook.

Months on and the engine still sounds nothing like the nice sweet unit it was. It looks as if it has been due to a software update, but I would expect that to make the unit perform better (in terms of performance, economy and smoothness), not worse. Mind, I'm not saying the performance is down in any way at all Very Happy

Does anyone know if there might be a more recent software update available that may cure this? It's been a year and a half since it was at a L-R dealer Question

Maybe you can try to add 0,4L 2-stroke oil next time refueling. Run 2 or 3 tanks with it. Some say engine noise will get less.

Engine Noisey (pinking type sound) under load/acceleration

I am just in the process of investigating this type of noise, my 2006 tdv6 (53k) was so very sweet sounding , it has been dealer maintained, after the last service ( new brake vac pipe ) it is now so unbelievably noisy, it is just like a pinking / crackly / cam follower /can of marbles, rattling very noticeable on acceleration / uphill load.
I can drive it without the noise as prominent by NOT accelerating too hard and by gentle use of the throttle. The dealer has driven it, the technicians initial comment, ‘’they are a bit noisy, maybe the sound proofing my have been disturbed’’ !! and booked it in for further investigation. will keep you posted.
Passengers are now commenting on the car sounding like tractor !!
Has anyone experienced this type of problem ?

LOVE THE SITE, BRILL, VERY USEFUL, BIG THANKS TO ALL CONCERNED.

I had a similar problem with my D3, and when TFC serviced it the first thing he noticed was that the pully tensioner was going to fall off! It's bearings had failed and it was rattling like a london cab. Mind you, this seemed to be easy to spot, (for Ian), so maybe there is a deeper problem.

Mine has just started doing the same. Most noticably after the cold snap we've just had. I'm booking it in for this and a few other bits and pieces, so I'll keep you all infomed if anything pops up.

I've had a similar issue over the winter but I seem to have narrowed it down to the diesel I use, if its supermarket diesel then it rattles loudly under acceleration, BP diesel and it runs much smoother?? I have also tried using Millers Diesel Ecomax and this makes a difference too, especially a double-dose.

I may be completely wrong on the diesel thing but its one hell of a coincidence if not, anyone had similar experiences using Censored supermarket fuel?

Cheers Thumbs Up

I thought that too but no change, I did however notice an increase in MPG by using Shell. So I've stuck with that for now, every little helps!!

i posted here a while back after i got the recall for brake vaccum about how it now sounded like a tractor.
Now 8 months down the line my brakes have failed due to brake vaccum and i am trying to get land rover to fix but they say it would have happened before now and wont do the job now im trying to get customer services involved with no joy.
Maybe just a coincedence but this might be why car was sounding more like a tractor.

You could try adding 200ml of 2 stroke (must be mineral, not synth or semi-synth) to your next full tank. See if the rattling is reduced. (It's perfectly safe - I do every few tanks; lots on this site about it also). If the rattling is reduced you'll get a feel for whether it's the engine internals. If it isn't (and someone mentioned a pulley Shocked ) you'll need to look elsewhere.

Interesting read about the noise, as I was sure mine got louder after the brake booster, and master cylinder was replaced as per the recall

Is this the kind of 2 stroke that people add to the diesel?

200ml per tank full?

Thanks

Could be a case of dirty injectors.
Try some fuel injector additive.

Very interesting - that makes at least 3 people who thought the engine was more rattly after the brake booster recall (see thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=758390#758390).

What could be going on here???
