Well, I haven't looked at this thread which I started for a while now, and wow what a response.
Just trying to remember whether it was the brake servo recall or the last service/ software update when I noticed it. I think it could have been after the recall.
If the brake servo work is causing this issue, why
Does anyone have a theory
Something is happening to our motors and L-R can't just ignore the issue, which is clearly caused by their recall work The whole car changes from a smooth quiet running very undiesel motor to a typically clattery diesel lump.
Not acceptable. If you wait for it to go wrong - it's bound to oblige

Have you checked the sound deadining on the injectors mine was missing the first time it went in and the second time they replaced the deadining

No not done it yet - just found that issue here today, so that's the first job to be done.
Fingers crossed then, but it sounds too good to be true If you wait for it to go wrong - it's bound to oblige

thought i would join the brake recall plus noise group same thing happened to me and I only had the pipes done more like the tractor than my smooth running engine

There must be somebody on the forum who's got a theory or idea, 'cos as the numbers grow, the idea of coincidence fades. If you wait for it to go wrong - it's bound to oblige

Hi,
I did some test drives since I notice some increased noise coming from RHS.
I noticed that it is much more audible when engine is cold and at lower rpm.
Noise disappears when driving downhill and removing foot from throttle. I don’t say that it is liked to injectors but it disappears together with injector’s tic-tic-tic.
If I’m right, the single pipe going from vacuum pump to booster has bee replaced by a double one which comes together at mid length.
It means that second vacuum pump outlet is now used.
Don’t know if this can cause such noise as it look more mechanically caused than something generated by suction.
Looked at vacuum pump drawing and cannot see any change in lubrication or something else….

Hi Stemu,
I agree with your analysis. Engine temp and revs have a major impact on the noise, which appears to be a general diesel ignition noise.
I still need to check the injector noise insulation panel under the engine cover, but I'm not very hopeful that it will remove the amount of noise I can hear. I live in hope. If you wait for it to go wrong - it's bound to oblige

I got a replacement injecter sound insulator, and it did reduce the tic tic ticing noise a bit, but the general clatering is still there. LR changed the vacuum pump also on mine so Im now wondering if thats it....?

So maybe the vacuum pump is the issue But could it equally be a software update that's responsible
I couldn't get a positive answer from the dealer on what they ACTUALLY did during the recall work, so I don't know if my pump was done. If you wait for it to go wrong - it's bound to oblige

What happens if you pump the brake pedal a lot (when stationary) when this noise is happening and it disappears? If it does disappear then it may imply the vacuum pump is making the noise.

I have just encountered the same problem. Mine went in to LR dealer for some warrantee work. The moment I drove it away from dealership (after I'd noticed that they failed to fix almost everything they were supposed to) I noticed tha the engine sounded different - like a tractor. They had replaced and exhaust gas valve and claim that this cannot be anything to do with the noisy engine. They do however recognise that there is a rattling tractor type noise. They have said that they will have to undertake exploritory work and if they fail to find a problem, I will have to pay for the labour. OUTRAGEOUS! In other words I would need to pay for them failing to find the problem. What do I do. I am soanal about my cars that I don't think I can live with it if it sounds like it does - it used to be so smooth. There has to be an answer if so many of us have experienced this.

Welcome to LR's secret society. To be fair to the dealer, they won't know what minor tweaks have been done to the engine management software - which I still maintain is causing this increase in engine noise - and they'll simply "pop it on the computer". Before you know it, you've got a slightly different map.
BTW, I think my MPG has improved by about a gnat's whisker, so I wondered if a minor ECU remap to improve D3 MPG - which most agree is shocking - has caused the noise increase The problem is that you can't get back to your old map because it's erased if any new map is installed.
No further forward, then. And if I'm right, there's no way back either. If you wait for it to go wrong - it's bound to oblige

I don't think the engine map can be at fault - I have a BAS Remap which hasn't changed since before I started getting the rattle... 2001 D2 GS (I must be mad!)

2. wynns diesel injector cleaner added to tank of fuel (type that lasts 3 months they say)......
