My engine started to become noiseier, mainly when it got warm.
I solved my engines "massey Ferguson" impression.
I discovered I needed oil and about 3 litres of it. d4 HSE in Corris Grey with Black options pack
D3 with the following
Alive Tuning EGR blanking kit
Alive Tuning Re-map
Alive Atrics console
Samco intercooler hoses (from Alive Tuning)
Alive Tuning De-Cat pipe, lovely tone!
Retrofit OEM Hybrid TV tuner

My 06 Discovery sounds sweet at tickover but when under load or going uphill it is noisy and rattly.
I have had new belts, oil and filters changed regularly. Updated software installed 18 months ago when new suspension pump and epb fitted. There have been many suggestions on this topic but is there a definitive answer please?

Opening an old thread. My 05 d3 is like this. Sounds like a tractor when planting the right foot. If you dip the clutch or put in neutral and coast its quiet and smooth. Quiet on idle too. Anyone ever get to the bottom of this. Mines an 05 se manual with dealer history. Just had all oils done and still the same. It does seem a bit quieter when using bp premium. .. 05 D3 SE

Having just moved from a Jeep GJ to a D3. I noticed the engine noise, pinking, slight rattle under load, all of which brought me to this thread. I would agree BP premium does help, especially compared to Tescos I'm going to try some Actevo as other members have. If this eliminates the noise I would presume it's injector nailing. It is interesting that some people find its more prominent after a visit to the dealers, gas valve or map, etc, or even a change in temperature.

Think I will also try some 2 stroke oil.
