Close, but not quite - I'm actually a TV Cameraman, but we use lenses all day...
(Just had to have a D3 after seeing the advert - still haven't got the scaffolding sorted so I can hang out the back!)
Sorry if I sounded like a pompous "know it all" - not intentional, I just love that photo effect and have been using it on video recently, so I got all carried away.

So do you know a lot about cameras, particularly DSLRs?
If so, I may have to PM you for some advice... thinking of buying myself a top-end one 2007 Porsche Boxster (987) 2.7

Happy to chat about camera's & lens's all day. Must warn you though I'm very biased towards Canon gear when it comes to DSLR's (don't want to start a Nikon war - it's just what I'm used to)

Chris, are you sure you want a top end one, thought you were a student, so therefore shoiuldn't have a few grand spare....
Personally, I prefer Nikon (Crews just had to start a war didn't he..... )
What sort of money are you thinking of spending, because there are different grades of 'top end' camera's.
Top end amatuer & top end Pro are miles apart for the cost, but may have only 'minor' differences in the results.
The D40 is a good basic camera, but I'd spend the money on the D80 if looking at that price range (around £500), then the D200 is a leap up to around £800 with some more gizmo features. I think the D300 is due out soon as well, so you could get some good deals on the 200 perhaps. The next leap up to the D2x and you're then into £3k+ for the body only.
If you can afford it, go for the D200/D300 Bodsys Brake Bible

We have a Nikon D40 already in the family which was bought by my Dad earlier in the year. It's a fantastic piece of kit, really like it - and it's that that has trully gotten me into photography.
But I've decided it's time to have my own DSLR which I can carry with me for many years to come... and so I'm looking for a top-end one which wont go out of date in a few months as it will be my camera for a long time...
I'm not entirely sure what my maximum price limit is going to be but I'd say somewhere around and about £600. Not sure I could justify any of the £1k+ ones
And before someone asks why 1 DSLR (the D40) isn't enough - well it's not particularly mine and I'll be leaving home before I know it and will not be able to depend on it. Also, photography is a hobby I have started taking seriously and I am on my third workshop course at the moment, specialising in Technical functions such as aperture. I can take hundreds and hundreds of photos spontaneously. Having a camera that can do all the works and tricks I feel is vital. I have a smaller 'compact' camera for everyday occassions where a DSLR isn't required - it's a Nikon S5 and that has proved to be excellent too.
Not rushing into anything though as there's no need - I'm beginning my research and want to finally end up with the best possible camera I can 2007 Porsche Boxster (987) 2.7

Stretch to the D200/300 then & save up for an extra lens if you're going to get into it. I'd say you probably want a super wide angle lens from some of the designer shots you've been playing with Bodsys Brake Bible

If there is a new 300 coming out to replace the 200 then I think I should wait for that, because I want the most up-to-the-minute camera when I buy it as I'm planning on keeping it.
The 200 is quite expensive at £800, is the 300 likely to be a big step up from that? 2007 Porsche Boxster (987) 2.7

Nikon's are also OK if you just want to take the occasional snaps...
Actually, I'm going to go against the flow here and say the camera you buy is not the most important consideration. I realise you said...

The rate of progress with digital equipment (and ccd chips in particular) is progressing so quickly that I'd suggest any camera you buy will be superseded and feel out of date much sooner than you seem to expect. If you're serious about photography how long will it be before you want the latest 100 mega pixel 3D technical marvel mark 4?
Whatever you buy, just go for the one that does everything you need and feels right, without spending too much money. Save your funds for the lens's. You may want to change your camera bodies often but great glass will be with you for years and has the most dramatic effect on all your pictures. I have a Canon EOS 1D Mark III (it's my job) but if someone with a 400D has a good lens, the pictures can look just as good!
The only exception is image size - it's very important (the size of the chip dramatically effects depth of field etc) so go for a full-frame camera if you can. It'll also help keep your lens's compatible for longer as well.
With photography, it's not what you've got - it's how you use it! 2005 D3 HSE

Apols for butting in here but as I have been looking at the D300 (it has GPS Connectivity) I can say they are going to be about £1400. Darren Griffin

No problem butting in, I couldn't find a price anywhere for one
I like the GPS connectivity bit when I read the specs but £1400.....
Chris, Crews recommendation about lenses is spot on. Canon and Nikon do some great lenses as well as leica if you have the cash!
Standard fitments on the whole so your body(s) should be good for years to come.
If you stick with Nikon though, perhaps your family will be tempted to buy a different lens fo rthe D40 which you could borrow from time to time..... Bodsys Brake Bible

Indeed so, as I have only recently been looking for an upgrade/additional body (have a D70 at the mo) it seemed sensible to buy the latest model, plus that new screen is a must have!
Oh and as I'm in SF next month I can take advantage of the weak dollar Darren Griffin
