The Dundonian, not saying we haven't lost money I regularly buy new cars and know full well you take a substantial hit and factor that into the whole scheme of things. I don't really see it as losing money its just the price of owning the car i own and love.

If the D5 is going down the premium SUV path then it will put a lot of discovery owners off for a few years and demand for late D4's will be good which will be good for prices too.

it doesn't have to look like a D3/4...but equally it doesn't have to look like a a RRS, Evoke, DS (peas from the pod) or any other 4WD SUV - but it ought to be the load lugging vehicle we have right now..I say ought to be as that is why I bought mine....the reasoning paid off with the service my D3 has given me.

The pics of prototypes we think are the D5, & the other pictures from trees releases arent the rectangular vehicle we all have right now, but something with a swept back rear roof so unless it is a Tardis will until I see one not be on my new car radar.

Im not thinking about my D4 having plummeting values (realistically it happens when any vehicle model is replaced) as I didn't buy one (as I didn't want one - I bought a totally impractical Jag XK instead).....my D3 is now 10 with 110k miles on it it owes me nothing & is in a very drivable usable state.

I'm never an early adopter of anything...& dont intend to be - ever
...but it'll all be revealed with the official launch & price structure release some time soon.

Those who want to be first kids on the block with one will splurge regardless of what its like - may even be on order right now, other discerning types with probably less spare cash or lower credit profile will wait & see. The wise way

Well if you're that tight on space maybe you should be looking at vans ? Do you fill your D3 right up to its square corners or what ? I think not.

I suspect that DG is right and the D5 will easy sell in very high numbers to all those people that can't afford a RR. LR won't be bothered by leaving those that need a big square utility vehicle behind.

True... but I think that was helped by changing the name.
Maybe our D4's would hold their prices better if the D5 had been called "Range Rover Sport Estate" or something?

In the North American market space, it now competes in the soft roader segment. The Discovery always did, but it had the distinction and cache allowing it to run in parallel to Ranges - it was seen as an alternative line, not necessarily a step down.

Not so with the D5 - the styling cues don't distinguish it enough from Ford CUVs; those looking for a premium SUV will have better ROI with the Range (which may include myself), or over with the Germans. All I'm hoping is that the refresh and accessories will be able to partially compensate...

As I wrote in a post elsewhere on this forum, I have seen the new D5 up close and indeed off road. My concern with the new discovery was that the rounded shape would mean you no longer have the stadium seating and it would be less practical, in the same way that the new RR with its more aerodynamic shape means there's less boot space.

First of all, and please note this is from looking at the outside, I've sadly (hint hint Land Rover) not seen the inside, the new D5 is massive. In my opinion if you can't fit what you need in the new D5 then you'll need a lorry.

The roof goes up at the back which will likely mean raised headroom in the third row of seats (again in my opinion but so nearly confirmed by someone I spoke to).

As for the more rounded shape. I was surprised how different it looks in the flesh to the various spy shots dotting the web. I do agree that all Land Rovers are the same shape these days and personally seem to only tell which is which by looking at the badge. I much preferred the Freelander 2 shape to the DS (yes I know it's a different car. Frankly Censored , it's the FL2 replacement), I prefer the classic RR to the L405. But that's in the same way that I prefer a Golf MK1 to the current model or a Series II to the frightfully modern Defender (electric windows, what the...?!). Design, etc moves on and while I simply adore the shape, practicality, etc etc of the D4, I am sure the new D5 will be more economical to run, better off road, full of new and exciting gadgets, as practical and is a car that will be on my short-list when the time comes to think about changing cars.

Gerry McGovern has already said that the new car retains a step in the roofline due to stadium seating.

I'm sure it will be great but I'm not sure it will be worth Range Rover money. It's on my shopping list but I need to see figures and what I'm getting for it.

He questioned in 2012 in an interview what the future of the stepped roofline might be. I guess we'll find out when the D5 is unveiled and we get to see the vehicle not in disguise. From a personal point of view, the higher the roof the better so I don't hit my head!

Doubt better off road than what D4 is at moment but then again it's down to how good the driver is behind the wheel and as most will probably venture more off road than a caravan site etc.To most it's going to be about price & spec Thumbs Up

I reckon it'll have improved traction software (although the current D4 is simply staggering off road), one of those auto off rode modes like in the RR and the All Terrain Progress Control.

As for price and spec, I agree and am interested to see what it ends up being priced at. If it's RR money (or thereabouts) due to the apparent increased luxury of the new D5, then would those who can afford it prefer to buy a RR or would practicality and all the other positives that make the D4 such a good car (and that we hope to be carried over to the D5) win customers?

i would seriously go and test drive the Sprinter 4x4 MWB. I have a lwb one and it is the most comfortable distance vehicle i have ever owned - I kid you not. I drove from Milan to Birmingham in one go (ok fuel stops) once and jumped out at the other end without needing even a stretch.

I also have a D4 HSE (which comes close) , a defender 90 and a bmw touring so i feel i can make a justified comparison.

If the sprinter was a MWB, i would probably use it as my daily driver - its that good.
