Correct temps for headlights should be about 4300k

IMO, about 3000-3500K is best in its own right for normal headlights - 4300K is a fair compromise for xenon and LEDs. Fogs are best right down at 2500K (selective yellow) though. There's also the matter of contrast, between the ambient light and headlights, which can give a better 3D picture. A warmer colour temperature encourages us to tune in our refined cone receptors for good colour vision, whereas a cooler temperature strikes a chord with our more coarse rods that give us low-colour night vision. It affects not only our ability to see but causes hormonal changes too which affect our "body clock" and fatigue, and I really hope to see manufacturers moving in this direction and pulling the fashion in line with better vision. Thumbs Up

My DS with LED fogs gave a better view than the current Disco.

Actually, the xenons, while an improvement, do not allow you to see quite so much further as the colour temperature tricks you into believing. The xenons offer a wider beam and slightly better throw, but it isn't as much as people think. There's also much more to lighting than intensity alone and beam pattern makes a huge difference.

With fogs though, the requirements are more specific though, as the increased glare* from shorter wavelength light is more of an issue and accurate colour perception is all the more useful. That's why selective yellow light is excellent for fog. In snow, however, blue light can offer increased definition, though it would still be harsh to use.

We're actually useless at judging our own vision, so we perceive things very differently to the reality, but our pereptions alone don't allow us to actually see better. Often people reason that light is "closer to daylight" but this is not actually important, because we don't see light in the same way according to light levels.

Thumbs Up

(* This is not, as some people wrongly believe due to Rayleigh scattering but the way the light reacts with the different receptors in our eyes.)

Is there a practical purpose for the huge cowling/spoiler on the top of the tailgate?

I always think they look like a stupid aftermarket add on.

The D5 one has holes in it along the top also.

It would've been better if they just extended the rear to the end of the spoiler giving the car a more practical shape.

I think car designers have just all imagination, lets make them all look the same.

Sitting here now, I don't think I'll be getting one of them, the Jag is a far nicer option. Thumbs Up

Will be a long time before I have to worry, but the current upper tailgate opens in just the right manner for me be able to have my surfboards on the roof and still open it. With this new tailgate / spoiler arrangement, it looks like it will foul anything on the roof that projects back beyond the hinge. Pity

The F-Pace is a nice car and something I would look at but its even less practical than the D5.

I'd bet that if you were to show to the general public, pictures of the D1-D4 all of them de-badged, a good percentage of them would recognise them as a Land Rover product.

I doubt that would be the case with the D5.

Even the run out Landmark D4, with impractical 20" rims and added shiny bling, still retains much of the original D3's practical and rugged design. The D5 is now very similar to any over big SUV on the market. No doubt some versions will retain the legendary, off-road and towing ability of its predecessor, but the USP's of the Disco have been heavily diluted.

Of course, as has been discussed here at length, the Disco USP's are appreciated and used only by the tiny minority, such as ourselves.

The D5 will have serious, almost like for like competition from the X5, Q7, ML/GL and in particular the XC90. Which can't be said of the previous Disco models.

I'd imagine that it will help keep the rear window cleaner, not sure if it's there to reduce lift on a car such as this?

I'm ok with the shape, less so if the price is silly but I really dislike offset number plates, looks all wrong to me. My plate is a 2x2 and I'm wondering if I set it as far right as possible on a reduced size but still legal background would it look ok?

I agree, the rear plate doesn't look right.

The rear has a Santa Fe look about it.

Will this be the first Disco in 27 years to feature a rectangular plate as standard?

I'd assumed that the rectangular plate was just for pre-production use. Now though I can't see how a square would fit.

It really doesn't look good IMO, almost as if it were an afterthought.
