Sorry to hear this Wiggs - hope you get a satisfactory solution sorted out.
Like kirkyworld I'd be interested in opinions on doing more frequent oil and filter changes, and other maintenance items. What is the consensus on recommended intervals in terms of mileage and time intervals?
I've always hated long-life servicing and all my cars have had annual oil and filter changes, at no more than 9 to 10k. And I get fed up with arguing with main dealers that it's my choice and my money if I want to change it more frequently than required.
I did buy a second hand A4 a few years back with 19,000 miles on clock and she'd only just had her first oil and filter change. I didn't keep her very long as my car needs changed when I moved jobs and areas so I don't know how she's doing now.

My money's on design flaw. I tried reading the following document, I know it's to do with marine diesels, but have to be honest I lost the will to live after page 2!

Down to personal choice but for me the goal is preserve oil quality which is degraded by unburnt diesel (the joys of DPF regeneration). I change my oil at around 6k but leave the filter for the annual service at 12k.
I'm probably a bit odd in doing it that way but for me it makes sense and it could not be easier - pop the hose onto the extraction tube, give the pump a few strokes and by the time I have grabbed the replacement oil, the funnel and some kimwipe the sump has been drained.

I do an interim oil and filter change in between the main services.
It's nice and easy with an oil extraction pump and doesn't cost much.
I'll let you know if mine goes bang!
It can't do any harm and 16k is asking a lot of the oil.D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.

would degraded oil lead to crankshaft failure? Many D3 run to the 15k service interval without any real problems. No mechanic but struggle with this one.

Mine had an engine failure last June. A shell rotated(?) starving the crank of oil.
2012 8 speed @ 74k
New engine took 6 weeks to fit, they told me it had been fitted with a new type of parts that have locating lugs crimped into them, like the newer versions of the engine have... Somehow I don't believe them.
I'm now worried about the new engine, changing the oil inbetween services but surely if parts move that shouldn't, oil condition wouldn't be a factor?D4.5 Facelift, Lazer ST4, Prospeed underbody and rack, IID BT, Compomotive/BFG KO2, Series MFlaps, RAI, Dog Gd+XBB, Alive Tuned, T-Max/YellowTop, RemoteFBH, GlassesMod, WheelWinchMod, Jack Mod, LED Mods, Seized Crank Mod....

Let's not forget we only hear about the failures, and not about the thousands that are ok. From what I've read the TDV6 is actually below the failure rate Landrover expect. Those that fail I would imagine will be a mechanical failure, rather than an oil problem, as long as a good spec oil is used. Food for thought, two people I know who work in the oil industry told me you need never change your oil as long as you use a high spec oil and change the filter regularly!!

I believe turbos shorten oil life so with the D4 having two of them I'd say oil change every 6k would be wise.
I read a long time ago about oil molecules being in long chains and the more and harder it's used the shorter the chains become and hence less protection. Someone will be along shortly with the definitive answer.Club Exped trailer

Service intervals on my old Evo were 4000 miles....
I'm sure manufacturers have simply learned the average failure rates and time to failure then just done their maths for the service intervals. To look after the engine properly everything probably needs to be far shorter.MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)

I guess the question to ask is has anyone who has had an engine fail done anything over the LR spec for servicing?
Intermediate service intervals etc??

As already posted, 5000 mile oil changes on mine, degraded "thin" oil may be leading to reduced lubrication of the crank shell and possible shell rotation may be the resultAltox GSM FBH controller thread

Well mine just gets dealer serviced when it tells me. It's now 10k into its interval. I'm happy to give a sample of engine oil to anyone who wants to get it analysed? Have we got anyone here who can get that done?
Mine has a DPF, and gets mixed use. I do some long trips in it and generally I don't hang around. It also tows the caravan regularly, and wifey gives it plenty of short runs in between, so it gets a good varied life.

Yes, degraded oil can lead to early failures or expose previously unrealised latent failures. The crank on the D3 is not that different to the D4 but the D4 dilutes its own oil, runs 2 turbos and produces much more torque.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
