Yes I have a driving license, but my passport is away for renewal at the moment. They want 2 items to prove address, and you can’t use the same item that proved your identity to prove address!
Problem for me is that I have to post them, as the BS does not have a local branch for me to pop into with the documents.
They want original documents, but also advise against sending originals in the post. So I have to get the copies signed and declared by a ‘professional person of standing’ such as a solicitor, doctor or police officer, to confirm it’s me who is sending them!
Banks and building societies. I want to open a new account, and they need to check my identity. That I can understand, but now everyone is going parerless it’s harder to find an ‘original’ copy of a statement or a utility bill. Why the can’t they accept that people are moving to the 21st centuary!
I was asked that in a bank - by a person I went to school with, who had worked with my mother and who usually saw my father paying-in money on a daily basis. Even the fact that I could tell him he had won the 1977 Petworth Primary School 'weeing up the wall' competition (a fact not many people would know) wouldn't wash...

Yes, but putting "he knows my toilet triumphs" in "proof of id" box probably would get him in trouble. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

A while back, I opened up three kiddie savings accounts with the Bank of Scotland. I went prepared with birth certificates et al.
It took 4 hours to complete the paperwork! I thought they were going to ask us out for lunch or put us on the payroll at the end.

I had the same identity stress with Barclays recently. I have a Barclays Mortgage, I have a Barclays business account, but when I wanted to be added to the Village Hall account (as I took on the Chairmanship) they wouldn't allow it unless I could prove who I was!
I dont have any utility bills in my name, because when we bought our current house, I was working away, and SWMBO did all the utility stuff.
So I took ID to a branch of Barclays, for them to authorise the copies, so I could send them to Barclays!
Even then, when they did add me to the bank mandate, no one told me. I still had to call India, and get it added to my online account! You couldn't make it up Richard

Moved from one investment company to another. Moving the money didn’t present any problem but the bank account details which did not change were another matter. The new company wanted proof aka a certified copy of a bank statement. So toddled down to the local Santander branch(soon to close) yes they would give me a paper copy of my last statement but they wouldn’t certify it! What use is that. I know I have online banking but a download scanned and sent of to them was not acceptable. So far no one has been able to give me a rational explanation why this should be so. I think they are protecting their interests above all. In the end if I scanned a voided cheque for the account and “e” mailed it to them they would accept that. You couldn’t make it up! Perhaps if everyone gave them their inside leg measurement we could all move on into the 21st century.Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

Well I’m glad it’s not just me then!
What I don’t get, is when I print a statement from my credit card account, on my colour laser printer, it looks exactly the same as one printed on the credit companies laser printer, and then posted to me! Yet my copy is inadmissible.

Gareth,
I’m led to believe it’s because they can trace the originator of their statement where as you can’t (within their system) and you can cut and paste your home copy.
At work we send applicants to their local branch to get the copy stamped before we accept it.

Very common here in Poland for government offices (basically Polish HMRC) to only accept faxes incase you photoshop an email. I did ask what was to stop me photoshopping said document printing it and then faxing it to them.
And don't ask about the sh#! Storm you can create by completing an official form in black ink and not blue ink - How do we know this isn't a photocopy Sir ??
I understand now why all post offices, tax offices etc have a perspex screen between you and the assistant - I thought it was to prevent robbery but I realise now its to stop you reaching over and straning someone !!
Compare this to Estonia where I have E-Residency. I have a smart card reader and a smart card that I plug into my PC. Any documents i need to send are uploaded to a secure folder - i log in and digitally sign with my smart card and thats it. Same process to open a bank account, order utilities, mobile phone contract etc. The provider sends and electronic contract to my folder and I sign it.
