Start it up in the morning TazDaz, with climate cont set to Auto, get out and look under front bumper, just to the right of no.plate (from memory) and below you will see the small exhaust pipe emitting fumes, or at least you should do if its below approx 5 deg c.

I realise that my climate was not on auto as our little boy had been playing, would this have an effect on the FBH ?

Not entirely sure, but don't think it operates if not in Auto.

OK thanks - I'll try that tomorrow (looks like it will be less than 5 degrees)

It was 2 degrees this morning and I don't think my FBH worked - however, I've never seen one working so how can I (easily) tell
You could always do what I did - touch the exhaust part of the FBH when parked up - but be careful - as mine was HOT

Well mine is working now, it's 3 degree's and I reset the heater by removing the power connector for 30 seconds + after the car had gone into sleep mode. I also had the climate set to auto and it fired up straight away with a little bit of smoke.
Should be good for the morning as it will be very cold.

Worked againt this morning at 5 degree's, so I guess it has been properly reset. Might be worth a try if anybody else had problems.

Should have nothing to do with the climate control setting as far as I am aware.
Its an assist to help bring the engine up to temp more quickly when the ambient temperature is 5 degrees or colder. Side benefit is that you'll get warm water in the heating system sooner too.

FBH
I've been using my 300 tdi to get to work for the last week so not sure if my FBH is working or not. I'll use the D3 tomorrow and check if the FBH is working as it's supposed to drop to -1C here overnight. Between what outside temperature range is the FBH supposed to operate?
One thing I'm certain of is the climate control in the 300 tdi seems far more efficient than that in my D3. The heater's as warm as toast within about 10 minutes even when sitting in traffic and even though the engine's not reached anywhere near its normal operating temperature!

When the FBH kicks in the engine is warm in 5 minutes if that, makes no odds whether your on the motorway or in traffic as the FBH heats up the coolant. Takes a lot longer without it.

So, at 5C or less the FBH should kick in and I should see some smoke + feel the hot gas out of the exhaust by the front passenger wheel. What can I expect the temperature gauge to be reading after about 5 or 10 minutes if all's working as it should?

Will be a good day tomorrow to test the FBH, freezing & foggy (in UK anyway). If we had a good summer I'd miss it but we didn't so I won't!!!
