For the knowledgeable, when the crank is locked in the correct position are the flat sections on the crank snout that drive the oil pump gears in the vertical position ?
I'm helping a mate do his pump and belts and he mentioned that my disco has much better acceleration than his and was wondering if his timing is slightly retarded.
Belt was changed at some stage but still had the original pump - MY06 327,000 KLMS.

Crankshaft flats

Hi Loanrangie,
you are right, the flats are vertical when the engine is locked up with tool inserted in the flexplate. I just changed my oilpump last week. On a new oilpump is a white plastic spacer which will progressively move out of the oilpump as the vertical lugs on the oilpump engage with vertical ears on crank. Just make sure that the oilpump lugs are vertical. If they are not. the oilpump case will not mate with the block, so knowing that, it is hard to go wrong.

yeah i did mine 3 years ago but this one we used a tool to hold the crank pulley instead of locking the flywheel and i believe who ever did the last belt change timed it incorrectly which is i think why it doesn't perform as it should.
Pump is on but i had to rotate the pump gear a little to get it to slide on.

I redid the timing as it was 1 tooth out on the crank pulley which i believe is why the owner said that after the pump and belt change he has noticed more power than previously, not that it was sluggish but it certainly has more pep.
