I've had a Rav4 and an Xtrail before the Disco. Both were better at in snow than this. They were both on standard tyres that the car came with, although the X-trail used Dunlop all season tyres. With the extra weight of the Disco, it seems that Winter tyres are key to decent stopping ability in snow and ice. I've not had problems before this week although I understand I would stop more quickly with Winter tyres in cold weather. Living in Kent, I'm not inclined to fork out for Winter tyres for what is likely to be one week a year at most (as I say I understand the better performance generally of Winter tyres) I don't consider my scorpions to be dangerous in cold weather and I don't do Winter road trips.
So Unless I can find some tyres better in the snow /ice that I can leave on all year then I may need to decide not to drive it for a few days every 3 years when we have snow. Any suggestions on a good all round , all season tyre that would be better than the scorpions on snow?
Probably doesn’t help you where you are but... I use studded winter tires, have the winter program enabled at all times and have absolutely no problems getting the D3 to do what I want it to do. This regardless whether I’m driving on a soft snowy countryside road, hard packed snow or on icy roads with no snow.
The only thing you must remember is that it is fairly heavy so the braking distance is a bit longer - no way around physics, really. The studs really do help, particularly on ice, compared to non-studded friction type of tires.
I would not drive with summer tires in the winter but that is just my opinion as a person who lives in a place where there is snow or winter-y conditions 3-5 months of the year in the south of the country and 5-7 months of the year in the far north.
Perhaps the other option, as you said yourself, would be not to drive that week

Reason I never used winters is that I was doing a fair bit of off-roading and from what I've seen winters are truely useless in mud. Hence the car was always on muds or ATs. Muds did pretty good in deep soft snow. All tyres are a compromise, it's just a case of working out priorities and choosing accordingly.

I'm with DSL👍
The correct speed is the key for something this big, the systems try to make us drive within the design limits. I'm also in the Highlands and never had a problem on standard road tyres.I'm to old to know everything......

on winter tyres? Otherwise please explain.
Couple of years back when we had some decent snow, my wife in a C Class AMG on winters drove past all the X5's, XC90's etc getting stuck on the hill to work. You could hear the chins dropping...d4 HSE

Winter tyres amazing
I live up a very steep road and have had at least 25cm of snow today. So impressed with the old Disco 3 with his Winter Vred tyres on. So so composed and just keeps going with no drama. I can certainly recommend winter tyres!

Seems like there is a lot of talk about the Scorpions not being all that good in the bad weather. I'm running Goodyear Wranglers but haven't had the opportunity to take mine out to see what they're like. Anyone got any experience of what they're like compared to the Scorpions in this weather?

Wranglers fitted on ours seems fine in the snow . Even towed the wife’s mini back into the street? Also believe she’s out now helping another stranded vehicle .

I've got 4 Scorpions on one D3 and 4 Wranglers on the other, both 19in rims.
Haven't noticed that much between them on the snow, maybe Wranglers very slightly better.
They both have to be treated very carefully. Getting going isn't generally a problem, but braking is a bit hairy, as are the switchback bends on the 1 in 3 downhill gradient
Neither are anything like as composed as the Wintracs that I ran a couple of winters ago, unsurprisingly.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Seems to be a common statement. You can get yourself going ok, but don't bank on being able to stop as fast as you can go! Ironically, mine is stuck on our very steep drive and I just don't fancy moving it in case it goes forward into the house rather than backwards! The drive has a layer of ice coated with snow so even walking up it is a challenge.

Wranglers on the D4 and no problems with traction. Just need to plan ahead for slopes and braking. Had four sets of Scorpion Zeros on the D3 and no problems. Again it’s the driving that counts. Never had problems in the “old” days with crossplies.2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.

I gave way to the temptation & desnowed her and headed out. Wranglers on, no issues in virgin snow, compacted snow and on narrow roads let others have priority. Good little jolly, even made the pretence of having to get some kindling in.
