It's probably my method that is wrong.
It appears the pump needs an oil supply to work, rather than just dump out what was contained currently in the TC.
The preferred option previously stated would prevent any dirt in the bottom of the oil being pumped thru the gearbox. I was being safe. But if the method doesn't work then its no good.
Pump first.
And then drain any excess from the bottom of sump.

I have been having a browse, looks like they are cheap enough fixes but require a fair amount of time and effort. I'll get round to them at some point soon.
Next on the list is the rear wiper and the fbh but at least now I have a fully functioning disco that I look forward to getting in
