Pics from today, a trip to a small group of minor temples to finish off the grand tour of Siem Reap’s gems. We are officially templed out. Thumbs Up At least we have a vague idea what was going on here over the few centuries from 900ad onwards. As they say in Vietnam, if you’re not confused then you don’t know what’s going on. Whistle

Modern Buddhist temple on the same site, loved the bells on the roof telling us a nice cooling breeze was heading our way. It was getting a little toastie. Thumbs Up

We’re off on the bus to Bangkok tomorrow, only 8 hours but should be a good window on E Thailand. Then a few days of flopping in Bangkok. Thumbs Up

And after that even more temples when we head north!! Laughing Laughing

PS Really looking forward getting better weefee! Big Cry Big Cry

A long day travelling from Siem Reap to Bangkok, arrived in the teeth of the rush hour and took a couple of hours to do ~6km. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Mind you, that might be because it’s really Area 51, Thai style. Whistle

Right, sorted out a couple of hundred of my fave photos from well over several hundred taken at Siem Reap. That place is mega photographic!! I know I can’t post a couple of hundred but will bing up enough to give a good flavour of the variety of things here. Will do that after changing hotels today.

Meanwhile, peeps will have heard of Piltdown Man, I give you Siem Reap Man. Thumbs Up

PS Gratuitous pano from the InterCont Bangkok. 3 days of serious R&R planned. Thumbs Up

Even better below. Whistle Whistle

Strange how the things that are destroying the temples make them look fantastic! No monks looking after most of the complexes so trees have taken root & done their thing.

The royal swimming pool, now where all the way overpriced restaurants are to the left of this pic.

A spider as big as a pizza tray. Whistle Whistle Well not quite but SWMBO wasn’t for getting her hand in there for scale. Rolling Eyes

Absolutely fantastic sunset over one of the lakes. The guide was hoping we’d not notice as he wanted to beat the traffic back in to town but no chance, it was a stunner. Thumbs Up

Same lake but the other side of the walkway out to a small temple in the middle of the man made lake.

Very Lord of the Rings.

And plenty of bats. Little ones but in numbers so probably Terry’s tourist eating country living relations. Thumbs Up

He’s behind you. Whistle Whistle

This the Black Lady temple, has a Khmer name but I’ll have to find it. It’s blackened from air strikes to clear out the Khmer Rouge that used the temples as bases. The whole area was covered in mines, anti tank and anti peeps, and thousands were removed from this area. We were subtly warned not to go wandering off.

On the way to the next, and last temple, we had the breakdown. We were rolling again in a couple of hours but plenty of time to watch the traffic roll past. This had the Indian ladies behind us chuckling!

Plus the food vendors got to hear about the load of stranded tourists so supplies were arriving. We declined their offers as we’ve seen first hand how all that scoff is treated in mid 30c temps.

This was the last temple of the 3rd day, Prasat Beng Mealea, we got to it a good bit later than was scheduled. Sun was getting low and it was really atmospheric. Forget Indiana Jones, forget Tomb Raider & Lara Croft, this was Apocolypse now just in the dry season. Absolutely fantastic. Thumbs Up

This is a stone coffin that had been turfed out during the Khmer Rouge occupation. Strikes me as a lot of effort. Shocked

No more tour guides and buses, on the 4th day tromping around we were on our own putting all of our new found knowledge to work. Well so we thought! Tuktuk in, PassApp worked brilliantly to get us a ride. The power of tech. Thumbs Up

We were going to see a lot of the little bits and bobs we’d passed in the buses but never got the chance to tromp around. Our fave type of sight seeing. Thumbs Up

OK, some were bit not so little! SWMBO declined to go up, it’s a LOT steeper than it looks in the pic, and I was sweating like a porker when I got to the top. But it was worth it.

Any one seen a snake around here? Whistle

More steep stairs, at least wooden this time. Thumbs Up

This is a fantastic reclining Buddha is the back wall of the temple, one epic piece of engineering.

A 9 headed Naga, meaning it’s for a mega important dude, ie the Leper King.

This is the real angle of this small temple, one of 10 for a king’s generals. And this is one of the more stable ones!! Shocked

Small part of the Elephant Terrace. We’d seen it the day before, late afternoon, but it was difficult to make out so we came back with the sun on it. Much better for pics. Thumbs Up

Loads of Garudas, or whatever the plural of a Garuda is. Whistle

Wedding pics time. SWMBO thought the outfits were lovely, and I was banned from shouting “Don’t do it!!”. Laughing Laughing

If this temple looks a bit like part of a 1960s new town or not quite finished then yes, it wasn’t finished as it was stuck by lightening and the king that commissioned it thought it was bad juju and lost interest.

And even more bats, torch coming in useful. Thumbs Up

OK, last load of AW pics, honest. Whistle

Lion guarding the entrance way to a temple, with appropriate sized little ‘un photobombing for scale.

The swimming pool again, this time in the correct order. Thumbs Up

These, getting pics in the right order permitting, we’re of a few outlying temples so it was a second day of hired car & driver. No way did we fancy going along the main Route 6 road in a tuktuk, plus a proper car isn’t much more, with AC, no dust and a cooler full of bottles of water in the boot. Thumbs Up

There are lots of inscriptions in the doorways of temples, these are from the builders saying who they were and what they did. Mixture of Khmer & Sanskrit, with Balinese thrown in. Waaaaaaaay above my pay grade to interpret.

A modern Buddhist monetary next to one of the outlier temples. Many of the old Khmer temples are use by present day Buddhists so we’re usually careful about poking our noses in and taking pics without checking they are not being used for prayers.

Water buffalo in their field, getting wet on a hot day. Pic well out of order as this was on day 1. Whistle

More carved elephants, me trying to be artistic and getting my arm in there. Big Cry

And one of my fave pics, one of a pair of bulls in front of a temple. I can’t remember the symbology, and SWMBO’s explanation doesn’t make sense to me, but they were very important. Thumbs Up

And some pics of BKK, the first the view from our bedroom window. Not good if you’re peckish. Brings my food pics down to scale.

And it’s going to be a cracking sunset from the lounge on the 37th floor, above all the traffic we were stuck in 24hrs ago. Thumbs Up
