It’s a CAN bus fault, as mentioned a few times above and in the thread I linked to (and many others).

A garage/auto electrician may not have come across it before, we have!

In other threads there are reports of people giving the top of the cluster a firm thump. Worth a try, if it works it’s 100% the cluster.

Other possible causes are water ingress into the body controller (internal fuse box) or maybe the transfer box ECU causing the same loss of CAN comms.

My understanding is it is an electrical loss of the medium speed CAN bus and the messages on it, which is reported in your error codes.

I had the exact same thing happen to me two weeks ago. I took it to my local Land Rover Specialist and they had the instrument console sent away to be repaired. They re-soldered a bunch of connections on the circuit board and now the car is happy again.

Thankyou all so much for your messages really helpful. I have spoken to the guy at the tronics place and we have someone taking it out at the weekend to send it off. Fingers crossed this works and if not we can then look at the can bus. I will keep you all posted and thanks again x

In this instance is it more likely a canbus fault than a solder joint or chip issue ? i had a similiar experience a few weeks back , dash lit up like a xmas tree and hazard lights, interior lights and doors locking unlocking but dash including dials were all still functioning unlike those that had a chip issue where the dash goes completely dead.

I'm talking about the whole CAN bus system, all the way into the microprocessor. If there's no link from the microprocessor to the connector onto the actual CAN bus wire pair, then that is also a CAN issue, with the same effect as a broken wire between the modules.

Hey Martin

Do you know where the microprocessor is located on the Disco3? I most definitely have a CAN BUS issue, and I think it's going to be the CAN wire pair which has been chewed in one or more places.. not sure where or how to start diagnosing that.

I know that there are diagrams that are available that not only show you the CAN network/wiring layout, but also where in the car the relevant connectors are located. Can anyone point me to them? I have tried searching the Forum for 'topology' and 'CANBUS' and looked at the resultant threads.

thanks
onetwentie.

hi all,

I've got the same issue, intermittently go to start, but aircon, radio and screen all non-operational, temp sensor on dash reads --C, interior light on and hazards flashing, won't start.

It has happened once whilst driving too, the radio display read "system fault shutting down" hazards came on but car continued to run. Speedo and all other dials still operating but --C temp.

Before I start taking the dash apart to remove the instrument cluster, is there any way to distinguish between an instrument cluster failure or other CANBUS issue elsewhere?

appreciate your help!!

Hi Downsman

There are a number of checks you can do, resistance and voltage tests - if you have a multimeter.

Have a read of this thread:

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic204708.html

It should serve as a bit of background reading if nothing else, but should be helpful too.

There are posts on there which I found very useful.

As for taking the Instrument Cluster out - it's actually not that difficult. I found a YouTube video on how to do it.

good luck!

Hi, I had this behaviour (D3 2006), started for no apparent reason. Later the same day I started getting constant audible tone at low road speeds (20mph perhaps, can't remember exactly).
Root cause proved to be faulty parking sensor ECU, presumably dumping spurious "data" onto the bus and upsetting other ECUs.
Couple of days later the parking sensors went from intermittent to complete failure, thereafter I got no more hazard/indicator light troubles, and no more unwanted audible warnings.
I never replaced the parking sensor ECU so I can't PROVE for sure that was the source of trouble, but the coincidence seemed too strong, partly 'cos FRONT parking sensors only kick-in at low road speed.
What I SHOULD have done is look for a power supply fuse for the parking sensor electronics and pulled it; brain is wiser now !!! But maybe you could try that, it's a really easy test ?
Wish you good luck Smile))

Thanks for the advice, you were right its not that hard to remove and giving it a bit of a slap seems to resolve my issue temporarily - so it looks like a dodgy solder in the board somewhere as the plug is A1.

Does anyone know if i can just swap the cluster with one from a breakers, or does it need to be paired with the ECU or something more technical when you change it?
