Finally - Hidden Winch
After straggling for also most a year to build the prototype and to get the bracket manufactured I am very happy to say that I’ve finally completed my hidden winch project.
Next will be the spare wheel carrier –already started…

Mate of mine who manufactured the bracket, also manufactured two spacers to fit between the tray and the fairlead.

Wasn’t thinking of doing others but I will speak to my mate – maybe he can manufacture the brackets and you can fit it as a DIY.
Let me know if you’re interested.

Good job! Which winch did you fit?
Would also be interested to know how much this would cost.

The winch that I have fitted is a no name (not mine testing it for the guys who is planning to import these winches). The bracket was manufactured to fit my WARN 12000lb or it can also fit a T-Max.
Regarding the free spooling or clutch lever – for this specific winch we had to modify the lever as per pic as you need a 180deg turn to free spool or lock the winch.

Looks pretty cool
Any problem with LR warranty issues ?
I assume you have dual batteries ? - I recently realised again how much power these things use , especially under severe strain - had to drag a tree out of water and even with engine running and 2x105a/h batteries had to leave the job half way and return the following day after doing some km's of charging, (although I think the Defenders alternator is on its way out).
Not quite possible during a self recovery exercise Erstwhile - D3 S '07. Dual battery system. Upgraded tow hitch. Mantec skid plate. Frontrunner rr. Tmax double headed built in compressor
Defender TD5 110 CSW '00. "With everything"

Update?
HI Tiaan
any update on the brackets etc?
also. have you used the winch in anger yet, and what has your experience been?
I need to get a winch fitted during March, and I like the look of the hidden option. my worries are being able to ccess the cable/drum in the bush if there is a snag, and maybe also cooling of the drum/brake.
