I think the orginal LR filter is made by MANN but Mahle is just as good for a standard filter. Most parts are made by other companies and boxed in LR packaging for a good mark up. GKN for example make the driveshafts in Aldridge, West Midlands and Ferodo make the brake pads.

Good bit of info there. Thanks. Just been out and checked mine - 5 min job with electric screwdriver. It looks pretty grim (21000 miles). I'll change mine pronto.

Surprising is'nt it Bill , I think from now on I will be asking for the air filter to be changed on service intervals............canny see why not, by the look of it maybe its false economy not to change .
Glad to have highlighted the problem I had, and some others also seem to have

Well if it's only under £13 then it's not worth going to the local motor factors as the price is near enough the same. Thanks for the update on the dealer price

I am considering fitting either K&N filters ('stock' and 'performance') to my diesel, other car forums tend to say this improves mpg, I'm struggling to achieve 27mpg at the moment I told the wife the manual Disco 3's do at least 35mpg, she keeps checking the damn on-board computer for the mpg-who thought of that one??? I'd appreciate any comments from my betters

I had a K&N for a short while until I read it can cause damage if not maintained & oiled properly, and that for offroad (dusty) conditions you should avoid performance filters. I didn't see a significant MPG or performance increase from it anyhow. I'll stay with paper filters or non-oil types to be on the safe side, just check/change it more often. I'm not so good at giving advice...may I offer you a sarcastic comment instead?

Checking filter - 6 cross-head screws to open box, do I need to undo the small bolt on the circular output side too ?
It's dark and ICBA to spend longer than I have to looking . . . . "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Just loosen off the clamp on the hose, then you can lift the plastic lid off and completely out of the way.
If you just undo the screws and try to pull it out and jam it in you make a mess of the filter - as demonstrated by my local dealer... its really worth the extra 10 seconds to make access easy!

Ditto that TallPaul, I did'nt remove the hose clamp when I removed the old filter, and yep, it got torn as the space is limited, so I opted to remove cover completely before installing the new one. takes minutes to acheive

You lot got me worried so replaced my air filter at the weekend as well. The original has done 26K and was mucky (i.e. Yorkshire for dirty) but not black. Still probably worth doing though.
I got a Mahle filter from Ebay for £7 + P&P.
