Told him he'd need to stick a good 5l in and that it was self-priming I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I thought that the engine stopped before it ran out completely, and that it would then let you restart and drive a short distance - although if the sender was faulty/set wrong that may not work either Disco 5 HSE Lux

I don't think Lex does boiler suits. A pair of moleskins and some dealer boots perhaps, but not a boiler suit. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Well, overwhelmed by the support; thank you all.
Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to try all the suggestions in person, as the recovery chap was there when I turned up. The dashboard did display "Engine Fault" with a little 'i' in an open book icon, and the starter motor was turning without the engine catching, just as it had the previous day before being jump started. Hoping it's a simple issue, I waved a sad farewell to the car on the back of the tow truck (props to Taylors, Townsend Garage, Tintinhull); it should be with Yeovil LR tomorrow morning. I'll post back with an update once Barry & crew have had a chance to look at it. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

I guess the most important question DrLex will want answering in the morning is
a) Are the parts on your shelf,
b) Available to order from LR
c) Or on back order

whats the thing on the starter motor called ? (is it bendix or something simular), I had one of them on a ford escort stick and wouldnt move up the shaft to engage the flywheel teeth thus the starter moter would spin but no engine start. could be same problem, sorted with BIG hammer or new starter simple to fix if is the problem. but then again I dont know how hard to get to D3 starters.
any update on cause? Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!
