URGENT!! Engine system failure - Lex's car stranded
Anyone able to help?
DrLex's SWMBO currently stuck at the side of the A303 with "Engine System Failure" and refusing to restart. Lex can't get near a PC to come on the forum and is seeing if Yeovil are able to get out to recover him (no longer under warranty).
At Lex's request:

Are there any possible "reset" procedures for these kind of faults that might allow the car to start and limp off the A303 to a safer location pending recovery?
TIAI know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I assume she's tried taking the key out of the ignition and letting it go to sleep before trying a restart?...... always on the road less travelled 🚧
Right, he's going to get her to try cycling the ignition a number of times (Gareth) and if that fails, lock up and wait for screen to go to sleep before attempting again (Ron).
In the meantime, he's searching for a tow truck!
Cheers guys. If anyone thinks of anything else to try, keep 'em coming and I'll keep relaying them to Lex. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Good point DG, if it has been mis-fuelled don't keep trying to start it or turn the engine over!!2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Just looked at the handbook [in my office] and checking the message centre list, "Engine System Failure" does not show as a message.
There's "Engine System Fault" and also "Engine System Service Required".
Is that definately what it says?
But possibly this is because mine is an early model.
When my turbo blew and the "Engine System Fault" message came on I had no power.
I did as per my previous post and all was well again....... always on the road less travelled 🚧
Bearing in mind I'm getting this third hand, I'd go with Engine System Fault. Will check re the fuelling.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
Response: Tank replaced last month and sender seems to be playing up, so may well be out of fuel.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I guess the fuel pressure would drop and it would come up with engine system fault then
Definitely not a misfuel, most likely out of from from the sounds of things. D3 fuel system self-primes from empty I recall from conversations with TFC? Lex ringing me back in a mo, so will suggest a can of the smelly stuff is hoofed over to the scene of the crime asap.
Thanks for all suggestions so far folks. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Bluie had Engine System FAULT when turbo failed, but would start and could be driven slowly & carefully.
Lex believes the ECU is likely to have had the chance to go to sleep as no attempt to insert for 20 mins or more, still no joy.
He's managed to get a recovery agent to head out there as they will get there quicker than he would with a can, and if it needs more than fuel they are best placed to help. SWMBO is in car with the dogs, so understandably keen to get her to a nicer place than the side of the A303
He'll update once he has a diagnosisI know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Note: If the vehicle runs out of fuel it will be
necessary to add a minimum of 4 litres (0.8
gallons) of fuel in order to restart the engine. In
some circumstances it will be necessary to
drive a short distance, typically 1.6 - 5 km (1 -
3 miles) in order for the vehicles monitoring
systems to register the additional fuel.
