Actually, the majority of engines aren't run at all at the factory - I think its something like 1 in 100 or 1 in 200 get 'hot tested'. The majority are now 'cold tested' because quality controls are much better these days.... Apparently.... Disco 5 HSE Lux

Mine is a V8 and I get pretty much as advertised. 13-14 city and 17-19 highway. Interesting note is that I don't notice much of a power or mileage difference even though I run 85 octane, as opposed to premium 91. So I use regular because the gas prices are higher in Colorado. But not as high as other parts of the world I as I understand. Oh well, I still feel these numbers are good considering the weight of the vehicle and what it is designed for.
Stupid question for the forum: Is the actual measurement of MPG the same in Europe as in America?

Measurement method is the same - it's just the gallons that are different. Yours are a wee bit smaller (US vs Imperial Gallons).
Therefore, you will get less miles to the gallon for the same economy (if that makes sense).
However, in mainland Europe they talk km/l !?! (or is that l/km with the V8?)

Nothing to do with the V8
In Belgium/Germany/France/..., it's liters per 100 kms.
But in the Netherlands, it's already different: they use 1 liter makes you go x kms, so the same as mpg but then using liters and kms.
And so it seems most countries have their own measurement-method

On the M4, jcts. 17-11 this a.m, cruise set at 76mph (amazingly I never killed anyone!) averaged 27.8mpg. On return journey into an oncoming wind & more uphill sections, averaged 26mpg.
As the engine has yet to do 400 miles I'm very pleased. I'd hope for better mpg once it "loosens up".

Given the 'adaptive' nature of the engine ECU, there must surely be some 'bedding in' prior to customer handover? not necassarily at the engine plant, but at some stage, the ECU must learn the current 'state of play' with the engine and consolidate this with the standard mapping?
On a run to the lake district from sussex last week my MPG settled to around 20.5 towing our caravan at about 60 give or take a bit.
Most of the time it seems to be around that mark in general driving.
I'm getting the TC treatment soon so hopefully I'll get a change for the better (car has 5800 miles on it now)

I'm getting about 24.5 mpg in general... which, if I'm going to be labled a 'planet killer' by the treehuggers, is far too high in my opinion !21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
