in my job I seen hundreds of recoveries made by winch or strap.....
After seeing one snap I will never be in the firing lines of a strap or winch line snapping.
Ive not done any 4x4 ing off road yet so not up to speed on the ins and outs of recovering
BUT after seeing the video above.....I am very surprised on the technique to drag it out at speed rather that take up the slack of the strap??? is that normal???
Must admit that puts me off of off roading

depends if you are making a kinetic recovery or not. The technique they used there was for a kinetic recovery and is usually done with a strap that has a little more elasticity than the one they used! When they work, they have massive pulling forces and can recover a hell of a lot more than a normal strap pull. When they go wrong, the line snaps and the catapult effect of the strap with the shackle on the end can damage vehicles and kill people.2014 D4 XS

Think it's more suited to D1's and Suzuki's. (If at all). the mass of the D3, especially in wet sand where there is no wheel contact at all with the ground means the forces are enourmous as the D3 is sitting totally on it's belly. Normally with a snatch recovery you would expect the vehicle to be back rolling on it's wheels after a few feet, ie out of a ditch etc.
Think Marshals & guests all learnt yesterday that this was not suited to the D3. The good thing was that the method in which it was done, ie totally by the book, meant all were safe and nobody harmed. I hope the TD5 is easily repaired.
As said by many above posts, the marshals were excellent and professional and gave us a great day. We all learnt a small lesson and had a great time!
I am pretty sure LRE do not teach or advise snatch recovery anymore. I will check.
To all those involved, once again, Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!

Just to clarify the shackle didn't come off ..the strop snapped and it's just the webbing that caused the damage . Both Blue Meanie and I had 12 ton 10% elasticated snatch ropes on board but these were declined on the day. I pulled AndrewS out of a D3 bedding scenario with ease in Macanterra with one of these 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
