Tow Hitch Receiver Weight Limit

Anyone know what the downward weight limit of the 2" tow hitch is? Usually 10% of the towing capacity but not sure on a D3 due to how it clips in.

Was thinking of a motorcycle mount to carry the bike around, 207kg's plus mount.

Something similar to http://www.ezimotow.com.au/index.htm

Might be possible if you incorporate the recovery point as in the way that uncle rays nato hitch mount does, might lessen the direct downward weight on the hitch. Don't know if there is a weight limit of something sticking out that far back of the disco. May affect the handling of the motor.

What bike you want to carry of 207kg?

I have seen a local guy here in South Africa with a KTM 525 on the standard removable D3 hitch. I gues about 140kg (KTM 525 Exec)?

The handbook says that the mass applied to the hitch (the S value) can be increased to 250kg with the proviso that the rear axle limit is not exceeded. The 'standard' 150kg rating assumes the vehicle is at Max Weight (of 3.2tonnes or thereabouts). If you reduce the payload, you can hang extra weight off the back. It isn't a kilo for kilo trade because the tow hitch is a metre away from the axle and there is a considerable bending moment. The only certain method of ensuring that you are not overloading the vehicle is to take it to a weighbridge. If PC Plod believe that the vehicle "doesn't look right", they will pull you and demand that you get it weighbridged. If you overload the axle limits, your insurance is void - a weighbridge certificate stating that it has already been tested is the only sure fire way of avoiding embarrassment.

If you are fabricating a m/c mount to hang on a standard towball, make sure that you get a 250kg rated towball. 'Cheapie' towballs are usually only rated to 100 / 150kg. Not sure about the rating of the LR swan-neck bar and ball.

Also, don't forget the mass of the m/c mounting structure as this, the towball and the nuts and bolts all contribute to the mass budget

Am pretty sure the LandRover towbars (both MultiHeight and Removable) are specced to take a max 250Kg load.

http://www.davecooper.co.uk/ does very reasonably priced tow bar racks.

I'm looking into one for my G650X which is ~150Kg. But I really dont think I'll get away with the R1200GSA on the towbar as that is ~250Kg, not to mention the bike rack and accessories on the bike.

The towball fitted on my vehicle by Matford LR is attached to a brand new pukka LR marked multi-height towbar and is only rated for an S value of 150kg. The towball itself is not LR marked so it might be a pattern part but I doubt it.

Brink do a 225kg ball and there are others rated at 250kg plus. To my surprise, the cheapy £6 ball from Towsure is rated at ">200kg" (whatever that means!)
