gearbox oil flush

Hello all. After much debating i finally double flushed the gearbox oil on my car. what a differance Very Happy , drained, re filled, run for 5 mins, drained and re filled. gear changes so much smoother, no clonking when selecting drive/reverse and the annoying shudder at 50mph when accelerating has gone. My D3 has got 101,000 miles on the clock and the gearbox feels more or less like new again. There is a little shudder at around 75 -80 but that could be wheel balance (i hope). If any one is thinking of changing the gearbox oil I can strongly recommend doing it

cheers disco steve, i have thought of at least flushing again in about 500-1000 miles. had aquote from a local gearbox specialist of £198 to drain and replace the filter but sounds like a mega flush could be a cheaper alternative.

Actually, i'm now thinking if i could rig up a mega flush system of my own!!

Can I ask what oil you used?

I have been thinking of doing this as my disco has 85k and sometimes sufferes from a slight shudder I think the oil change would cure. I have been considering using the LR branded oil but have also been advised to check out Millers Oil (Millermatic ATF) which cost around £20 p5L as apposed to the LR stuff at £20 PL.

NIDisco3, As for oil, I'd only use the genuine stuff. Yes its more expensive, but if it all goes wrong and you are under warranty, then they will wriggle out of paying.

Use genuine oil only, anything else is a compromise. If you care enough to change the oil then you care enough to keep the existing gear box?

I agree if your vehicle is still under warranty, but for those older that 36 mths there are a number of options Whistle

For the record LR OEM ATF (which costs the earth when bought from LR dealers) is actually Shell M1375.4 fluid (it is also used in Jaguars with the same ZF gearbox)

Try shopping around, you may be surprised on the cost differences, also worth speaking to a gearbox specialist, and there are several that know the ZF6HP26 inside out who will advise on which fluids can/cannot be used

As most know, LR will tell you it is 'filled for life' (yeah right) Rolling with laughter

hello NIDisco3. I used carlube ATF-Q3 it worked out at about £50.00 for 2 x 4.5l and 1 x 1l bottles (needed the 1l with the spout to get the oil back in)

I may consider using genuine oil the next time i change, but this seems fine. my disco is a 54 plate MY05 so no warranty issues.

Not difficult Thumbs Up

Remove the gearbox undercover, remove filler plug first, some fluid will drain out, then remove the bottom drain plug (it will 'click as it has a ratchet notce) more fluid drains, usually a total of approx 4.5 litres in total.

Replace bottom drain plug, and re-fill until a trace runs out, start engine, and continue to fill until a trace again runs out.

Replace filler plug - job done Thumbs Up

(note, refill MUST be done with vehicle level, i.e. NOT on ramps)

Tip - to refill I used one of these, slightly modified, made it really easy Thumbs Up

any body got any pictures or pointers as to where cover , fill plug drain plug etc are located etc are located would be a great help.

hi aquasurfer, sorry for not replying sooner. steve had the answer well covered. I'm afraid i did'nt take any pictures, but there is either 4 or 6 bolts holding the cover on and then 1 large drain plug on the bottom of the gearbox (allen key needed) and then the fill and level plug on the drivers side of the gear box (also allen headed).
