forgot to add that when refilling you can get about 2 litres in and then appears to be full. start the car up and with your foot on the brake move the gear selector from park through reverse, neutral and drive and then back again pausing for a couple of seconds in each position. I then left it running whilst filling the next 2.5 litres. This double flush made a really big differance the the gearbox action.

The link below is to my ZF transmission files in my Gallery. I have quite a few jpg's and pdf's related to the ZF 6HP26X, the 6 speed transmission in our 3's. I also note that is is similar to the Ford 6R60 now found in their USA trucks. I presume Ford discovered that it is a pretty good transmission and cut a deal with ZF to license build them.
About a month back, I did the full service - change the pan/filter and install new LR/ZF oil and what a pleasant surprise. I figured all was OK before I did the oil change but it seemed like a good idea at 128,000 km, (80,000 miles). Now I get an extra 100 km per tank of petrol, 4.4L V8, in town and perhaps 150 km more on the highway. Acceleration is better and I guess smoother shifts. They were pretty good before the change however, but better yet, I figure the cost, ($800.00), will be free, as in a year the fuel savings will have paid for the oil change.
In the gallery files, there are also references to something the guys in Australia are doing - that is replacing the one piece plastic pan and filter combo with a separate metal pan and separate filter. This is because they change oil much more often down under as their conditions are much more difficult than most locals - water crossings, towing, hot, hilly, boggy, etc.

Contrary to my previous post on using the genuine shell m1375.4 I have since changed my oil for the 2nd time using Red Line - http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?product=30504, it's the only oil I have found that specifically states that it meets the spec of Shell M1375.4.
I replaced 3.5 litres with the genuine stuff 15k miles ago and have just done the same with the redline, a double flush I suppose using 7 litres. 1964 Series IIA SWB Truck Cab - gone
