Just bought a Garmin Nuvi 1410 after seeing Gazillio's install, and can confirm that the GPS reception is fine when the unit is mounted in the empty satnav space. Ecoroute HD is on order from Lemon Digital (£73).
Thanks again for the idea Gaz!

Glad you like it I hope you get the chance to get it properly "plumbed in" in due course.

It does not work like that:
You take off the window sucker section then clip the frame to the nav unit. You then push the whole into the space at a slight angle with the rubber mat underneath as normal. It fits snuggly and does not move at all even with repeated touch screen action! (just luck that it fits exactly)
It is possible to then unclip the nav leaving the frame in place if you want to move it or just pull the whole out
If you get the power cable wire into the back of the cubby hole you of course plug it in first!

I get it! So you can have four wires to the back of it then, power, 2 external aerials and if needed a video input for a rear camera? But I think the 1490tv only has the line input not the 1490t? Because I'm thinking of connecting my rear camera for parking and I could use this satnav for that use, plus I'd like the ecoRoute hd connector too, to read engine info and read the faults. Only thing is you need an extra power cable to use in another car. Still waiting for someone to measure the console on a D4 to see if it will fit in the centre console of a D3.

The only cable into the back is the power lead on the Garmin Nuvi 1410.....
All else is done perfectly via the internal GPS Arial & Bluetooth (Cable Free)
The 1410 comes with a power lead and a "Mini USB" lead. The power cable can be wired into the dash and the Mini USB cable can be used with a USB 12V adapter to power the unit in other cars via 12v power socket.
You also need it to update the unit via your PC with free Camera & software updates etc. (done at MyGarmin.com)
It really is the perfect setup with its 5" Screen for non-nav models.
No idea about ANY other Garmin Nuvi models or sizes just the 1410!

Hhhhmmmmm! The only garmin I can find with tv was the 1490tv unit. It has the power input at rear plus two external aerial inputs plus a video input. I didn't know the 1410 had tv, big price difference too between the 1410 and the 1490tv.

Sorry I got you mixed up with someone else. I can't find the thread I was reading either But thanks for showing us the install as it has got me thinking as you have read. Another thing, and I'm hoping it's you that did this, how do you move the obd connector and where did you put it?

The 1410 is a Halfords exclusive. You won't find it on the Garmin website. (However, you will see reference to it on compatibility lists, for example for the Ecoroute HD.
I also looked at the 1490. The in-built traffic function and pan-european mapping attracted me but, in the end, the wallet ruled! I can't be ceratin, but the 1490 and 1410 did look identical in size. They are certainly both 5 inch screens. So the 1490 should go in to the cubby space "a la Gaz".
Gaz, when you hard-wired yours in, did you run an in-line 12v socket to your 12v source, and then plug the Garmin lead into it? I'm assuming there must be some electronics in the Garmin plug that drop the voltage down from 12v to the standard USB voltage (5v?) - or am I talking out of my a***?

I got the Halfords lad to do it with my assistance!
The Cable is 12v ready so you just need to find a power source and then tap in a 12v Female socket then simply plug the male socket into this behind the dash. WE used the live feed to the heater fan as it was easily accessible so as long as the fan dial is just slightly on there is a live feed to the unit. (I have my fan on at all times)

Lad,
I simply unscrewed the OBD plug plugged in the ECORoute Adapter Blue-tooth Unit and then pushed them into a nook behind the kicker panel and screwed it back up. Takes about 30 seconds to access as only two screws.
