Looked out the window first thing this morning, frosty roof & windows on car and thought - FBH, I wonder if it works? (sad or what?)
Anyhow, went outside and started engine, OAT shows +1°C - no FBH action
Came back in and did a quick search on here and found some debate as to whether the air-con needs to be on or not, went back out and pressed the "Auto" button, then switched off/on and started the engine again - lo and behold - the lovely smell of a manky old paraffin heater accompanied by the usual noise of the pump and burner and a hot FBH exhaust.
So it appears that the air-con does need to be on for it to work in auto mode, I assume that the after-market timer or GSM options override this?
Odd thing was though, there was no smoke at all, I guess that's an optional extra too Clive

This is what the FBH looks like under the bonnet just in front of the battery box.
Mine worked last night when we went out at about 8pm, reading was 5 degrees on the OTG. Bit of smoke, not too bad.____

Well, as I said, there was some debate about it, perhaps it depends on the year of the car and/or the software revision in whatever bit controls it.
Not really a problem anyway, just need to make sure the AC is active when shutting it off when anticipating cold the next day.Clive

I never seen this in 3 and a half years of d3 ownership. do I conclude mines has never worked? I can see how some folk would think your engine was on fire BTW.
I only just recently started reading up on thr FBH and think its now time to do the Mod to manually switch it on.
Ill wait first for a frosty morning and look for signs of life in it first though....

mine worked this morning at +5c. I wouldnt have noticed if it wasnt for the little RED LED light that I have on the dashboard.
The operation of the FBH isnt always noticable as the pump can run at variable speeds and you dont always get oodles of smoke.Duncan

Primed it first using the Faultmate this fills the unit with excess fuel then started the burner. It's cleans all the sticky residue which can occur through little use. It can be fun in Tesco car park
Mine kicked itself into life this morning at 1 degC. The bloody thing stinks like a lorry. Why did they not exhaust it through the engine exhaust system? SWMBO was moaning about it smoking out the tintent, so being an obedient husband I turned the engine off Run silent, run deep!!
